we probably wont see a G800.. but there may be a 550 next month

Unconfirm rumors

Matrox - the new technology in the new chip - RawIron 00:46
March, 22-nd on Game Development Conference (GDC) Matrox will carry out(spend) lecture on structures with cards(maps) of displacement (displacement mapping). As against relief structures, structures with cards(maps) of displacement influence geometry of object. If it is simple: there is a structure, there is an object, there is a card(map) of displacement and that turns out at their overlapping: the Same effect can be achieved, using ??????? DX8. Meanwhile such technology it is hardware does not support any of existing chips for the mass consumer. Matrox wants to correct this situation: this technology will be used in its(her) new chip - G550. More detailed and exact information on the new chip while is not present. But at lecture Matrox all will clear, I think.

The only thing that concerns me is if the G550 is just a higher clocked G450 packed with more "features". Anyone knows if this card is targeted for gamers?

Well, they're going to speak at a gaming conference.. so unless it's not for games, they won't be there.. but i think they learn from the 450 which was DONT HOLD BACK, give it all you got.. I'm FINALLY ready from my G400 to upgrade.. love the duals love the company..

Matrox is actually 1 company that has concurrent driver updates and ADDED features.. not like ATI whom bum out on their older card...

Well, they did state that they are leaving the gaming market a few months ago. Hope that this means they're retracting that statement. :)

Well, finally there'll be more choices! Although I like nVidia, but I'm hoping there'll be more selection on video cards, not just ATI vs nVidia.. first we have Kyro, now there's Matrox join the battle.. Who else?

no more matrox for me - G400 was it. If they threw a car in with the card I would, but only so I could run the car over the card

Sure you can. :) Minus the FSAA, the G400 (especially Max) scales with the CPU very well. If you have a P3-700 or so, the thing is juuuuuust about as fast as a GF2MX, with better image quality to boot. ;)

Not bad for something of its age!

Biggs: I've been waiting for Bitboys' product for a long long time.. but so far I've seen nothing except vaporware.. I actually believe them (since the way they do their coding...)

esung,

"...but so far I've seen nothing except vaporware"

I'll bet my neighbor's dog that this trend will continue. Call it a hunch. ;)
