Matrox G450 vs. G550, which one to choose?

I'm considering buying one of these cards, but I will first need to know what the actual differences are between them. I know that the G550 is more powerful, but how about drivers, overall stability, image quality (especially 2D), OpenGL performance etc.?

Any comments are welcome 🙂

My dad had one. He loved everything about it except playing games. He ended up selling it for a GF2MX dual head because the 550 wouldn't run Medal of Honor.

Both cards are identical when it comes to performance. The G550 series has some additional features. Here is a comparison.

Why wouldn't the G550 not run this particular game?

bozo1 thanks for the link 🙂

BTW, does anyone here use the G450/G550 with Linux?

The Matrox G550 is definitely not for playing games. It has a vertex shader but it can only be used using it's dumb/annoying headcasting feature. The G550 was meant to give supierior 2D quality and it also features one of the best dual head monitor outputs.

it wouldn't run that particular game because medal of honor is rather demanding, hardware wise, and the g550 is very, very slow in 3d.

I see. Thanks 🙂

kingbob00 what is this headcasting feature exactly? Matrox's website doesn't provide any information on it.

After reading this thread, I was wondering the same thing, and found this. Very funky! Seems like the kind of thing that would be really hard to get working correctly, though.

Doh, I was looking at the information on the G450. I must be getting tired 🙂

HEadcasting is a type of videoconferencing, which the matrox thought of implementing a vertex shader for it. Instead of sedning and recieveing an image, it generates one with the software. I really don't know why anyone would really need this but there are some weird ideas out there.

Thanks for the information, kingbob00! 🙂

Since games depend on the 3D-capabilities of a videocard, it seems that these are not adequate.

I don't play a lot of games, but I would like to do some CAD-stuff now and then, which does depend on the 3D-functionality of the videocard.

I think I'll have to do some more research before deciding.
