As I quoted above from the Matrox tech on the Matrox forum where someone had one identical to mine with the same question:

- Our G-400 and later graphics cards, be it AGP4x or AGP2x, are compatible with virtually all motherboards.
However, if the motherboard calls for a 1.5V card ONLY to be installed, the 2x versions of our G400 card may not work properly.

When I read that I have to conclude that there are lots of different G400's and mine may not be ok after all. I'm just not ready to try, but thanks for the input

It's tough when I see documentary evidence that contradicts other docs, and both from the manufacturer

All they are stating is that it may not work properly which is why I posted that you can just give it a try...

Yes, I understood that from your first post, and I expect I'm being overly cautious. But there's not just a warning in the installation guide, there's a sticker across the top of the AGP slot warning of permanent damage. Practically a skull and crossbones warning. That's more than just not working. If it just didnt work I could try it and if it fails just go get something else. After all I have 3 more AGP's sitting on my desk that my friend gave me. I could keep trying those too.

Actually, would they mean damage to the slot or to the whole board?

Sorry to prolong this so, but I really am something of a rookie at this. And at the same time, very curious. I like to learn how things work and I appreciate the help I get here.

Far be it for me to LYK what they mean but if my AGP card states it works both ways and something goes wrong then it's RMA time...

Older versions of the G400 were Agp 2X only w/ just 3.3V signaling and if you put one of the older G400 cards into a modern motherboard you'll fry the AGP slot its that simple, just spend the cash and get the cheapest compatible agp card you can find and you'll be in good shape.

Well, I figure that's the thing to do. Lots of time spent worrying with this one. But hey, I have learned some more, so I've gotten a lot of benefit.

Really, all of you who toss things down to those below, it's appreciated!
