Matrix vs. Star Wars

IMHO the Matrix trilogy blows away the original Star Wars trilogy. What do you guys think?

Original SW Trilogy > The Matrix Trilogy

Without a doubt. It's when you start talking about the new SW Trilogy that things get complicated.

I personally liked the direction they took with the Matrix series. Everyone just expected a special effects-laden kapow fest (in which it didn't disappoint), but it also added a much deeper storyline.

Neo's a much more likeable hero IMHO than whiny beeotch Luke Skywalker.

Agent Smith has tons of personality and made an awesome villain.

Both hero and villain grew and evolved throughout the trilogy.

Only things lacking in The Matrix are Han and Chewie.

EDIT: Not to mention the fights in the Star Wars movies were never nearly as dramatic as those in The Matrix.

Oh, and for anyone that disagrees with me: "But I was gonna go to the Tosche station to pick up some power converters!..."

Lets see the ratio of good:bad

Matrix - 1:2
SW - 2:3

Right now SW is slightly ahead, but SW does seem to be heading for rock bottom so that could change.

That you need to put that crack pipe down...

First off, the Matrix series SUCKED. The first one was ok, but that is it. Secondly, take a look at the era. Watch the original Star Wars movie and then go rent ANY other sci-fi movie in that time. It is like night and day. Star Wars was waaaay ahead of its time. I watch it now and STILL can't believe it was made in the 70s'. Empire was my favorite though. 😉

From the perspective of adulthood, the Star Wars trilogy SUCKED. As a kid, I loved it, but as an adult, the cheesiness shines through loud and clear.

Don't you think that has alot more to do with the amount of money used in the making of the movie?

Why couldn't other movies have bigger budgets? Lucas didn't have a big name back then. How was he able to get the cash? Because he had an AWESOME vision, and was able to transfer it to the screen.

He had a big enough budget with American Graffiti under his belt to do Star Wars 1. An AWESOME vision? Oh, I thought the "boy saves princess from nasty guy" theme hadn't been used about 5000000 times before. My bad 😛

m2 was the worst of all. Could have been like 15 minutes long if neo didn't stop to fight EVERY bad guy he came across.

The original Star Wars (ep. 4) did not have a big budget. It was a smaller-budget sleeper hit that (IIRC) still holds the first-run length record (17 months in the theaters, IIRC, unlikely to ever be beat in today's turn-and-burn-and-get-it-to-DVD film market). It was only after its unexpected box-office success that 5 and 6 went forward as big-budget blockbusters.
Star Wars was also the 1st film I ever saw in a theater (although I had gone to the drive-in often before that, there was one just a few blocks from where I grew up). I was all of 6. 🙂

I enjoyed the Matrix Trilogy as well, but it's difficult to compare it to the Star Wars Trilogy.

The Matrix Trilogy began as a seemingly slick, mainstream sci-fi story, but ended up exploring religion, human nature and other philosophical issues. I enjoyed all three films because even though I didn't fully understand them, I kept thinking about them afterwards. For me, a movie that makes me think deserves a lot of credit, although I do think that the storytelling in the sequels was a bit sloppy at times. I think a lot of people were caught off guard by Reloaded and Revolutions, and as a result the trilogy left a bad taste in their mouths.

Star Wars, on the other hand, is much more accessible to the general viewing audience. Its characters, themes and storylines are simple, but the movies are well-filmed, well-constructed and can be appreciated by adults as well as children. Star Wars had a much greater impact on the film industry and pop culture in general, and has remained popular 25 years after its initial release. Its influence alone gives the Star Wars Trilogy an edge over Matrix.

Yeah, I guess the Lord of the Rings had no vision either. After all, good vs evil, hey, that's original. I'm sure the scenes, effects, and characters were just something ANYONE could have come up with. That takes no vision, right? My bad. 😛
