Honestly, after the calamity towrads this film bia complaints and even long winded essay's, I must say htat I enjoyed it. I'll admit that Agent Smith's death made little sense at most, but for the most part it was enjoyable.

THe only serious problem with the film was it's beginning. I found it to be too chaotic and disorganized in a sloppy manner. I understand what they were going for, but it still same detracted from the serious tone the rest of the movie was going for.

Smith's death made perfect sense. It was obvious from Reloaded. He had to die.

Matrix finished its triology at the same time that Lord of the Rings came out. It totally sucked in comparison. But, it actually is a good trilogy, but it should have been so much better. Matrix 1 was more original ideas than great writing. Unfortunately in the sequels they actually got serious about the ideas and wrote rather boring and pretentious scripts.

And we all started to realize that Keanu Reeves is not a good actor.

Well, the Matrix wasn't originally intended to be a trilogy, as LOTR was, so I think it's a bit unfair to hold it to the same standards.

I enjoyed all three movies (Rev the least because I enjoyed the hand-to-hand combat special effects more than CGI machines shooting each other.) I thought the ending was great, however. Neo "sacrificing himself" because it would be the only way to kill Smith, to rid him of his duty in his existance and therefor have him cease to exist himself. Wow, that having no choice but to die to save the world is Biblical allusion I for some reason missed until I typed this.

Smith, a virus within the Matrix, if you will, was beyond the control of the machines. Neo brokered a peace with the Machines. He knew that the only way to stop Smith was for him to give his own life. If he ceased to exist, so would Smith.

You didn't explain WHY Smith's existance is dependant on Neo's existance.

He, Neo, battled evil(devil maybe, the one who was one with the creator but sought more), and won. Sound familiar?

Fair enough.

According to the Architect's explanation, whenever The One for a particular version of the Matrix is found (that is, when the One is born) its incompatibility with the rules of the system leads inexorably to a cataclysmic system crash. Agent Smith is the embodiment of this progressive system failure.

His 'new purpose' was a direct and immediate result of Neo assuming his role as the One. Neo's existence within the Matrix is a paradox, something absolutely intolerable to a system that refuses to acknowledge a reality beyond itself.

His presence thus destabilizes the system, and Smith's continuing replication is the exponential spread of the instability (or anomaly) throughout the Matrix. Once it reaches all parts of the system (remember Smith admitting to wanting 'everything'?) the Matrix will crash.

brigden,

The One's presence within the system allowed for smith's expanded his purpose, and to correct this Neo battled him, defeated him and accepted death. What was the result for the rest of humanity, additional centuries in the test tube's being harvested?

Got another one I've wondered about, how can smith leave the system (virtual programmed existence) and transfer himself into "reality"? Only the system became instable, not reality.....

The way I thought of exsistence in the Matrix is that everything is a program, even people's minds. So when Smith took over that one person in the matrix, Smith took over that guy's mind as well. That mind is then returned to the body. Thus, Smith (or a copy of Smith) is able to be in reality.

Well, if anyone feels like reading a very thorough breakdown of the movie (which gives an answer to a lot of the questions posed here), check out this link.
