Well if you have the money for Matlab, then you have the money for books. I happen to know a thing or two about Matlab, or at least I did. What particular problem domain are you working in? I used Matlab a lot in my early days of image processing and computer vision research, before I decided to just write my own libraries/framework in C/C++ because Matlab felt very awkward to me. It's great for prototyping a rough-around-the-edges idea, but writing actual production code is a serious PITA with Matlab.
