I'm finally starting to break away from the Dark side. I have been playing around with my Mandrake install, on a second computer, for the time being. One thing that I used in Windows a lot for school was Mathematica; my university (U of Texas) doesn't have a site license for Mathematica, so I can't possibly pay $895 for it, as useful as it is for Engineering.

What other Linux software is similar? I love Mathematica becuase, even though it is complex, the power it yields is amazing. Unfortunately I don't think any other math software can be as powerful, but I'm not using it for anything near it's potential so there must be some open source/affordable math software...now just point me in the right direction.

If you just want to be able to calculate enormous integers (get the full result for 555^555, for example), you can use the freely-included "bc" utility.

Now do 99999999^999999999999999.

I need integration, the ability to plot systems. I like how mathematica can integrate functions that can't be expressed except in terms of another function, where my TI89 just gives us and refuses to integrate it. I'll have to try Maple.

Actually, I'm doing 999^999999 right now. I'll post it if you want.

7:14 right now... lol

My guess? Close to 10^(10^135)

There is software called scilab which is supposed to be simillar to matlab. May be it will help.
