Mathematicians! How do I calculate percent difference?

Let's say you make $1000/wk and your company tells you they are having a difficult period and will be reducing everyone's pay by 25% but will give it back in 3 months. 3 months later they tell you they're giving it back and will increase everyone's pay by the same 25%.

Question, are you back to earning $1000/wk?

'The same 25%' kinda implies they are increasing/decreasing pay by the same amount, regardless of the fact that what you are trying to say is '25% of 75% of something is less than 25% of 100% of something,' to which the reply should be 'no fucking shit.'

So...you failed to grasp the grade-school concept of percentages. A logical person would have just reverted to other skills, like multiplication, and how to count to 100, and figured the shit out. Barring that, a person with a damaged but marginally functional cerebral cortex would have just googled it.

You never EVER multiply times 100 with percentages. You could multiply by 100%, but never by 100.

Multiplying by 1 is okay. 1 = 100%. Multiplying by 100 is just plain wrong.

If I make $20,000 per year and you make $40,000, then you make ($40,000 - $20,000) / ($20,000) = 20000 / 20000 = 1 = 100% more than what I make. You do not make 20000 / 20000 * 100 = 100 = 10000% more than what I make!

You're absolutely right. But, given the question, I erred on the side of simplicity for his sake. I.e, my best guess at the intended audience of the response. I.e., if you want to convert yards to feet, you don't multiply by 3, you multiply by 3 feet per yard. But, if it appeared that someone might be confused by that, I would just say, "multiply by 3."

We start with $1000/wk then get a 25% pay cut so you're now at $750/wk. You then, 3 months later, get a 25% pay increase so your pay becomes $937.50/wk.

The answer would be the same in the Sudan, or any other place you like.
