Math Teacher Let Students Buy Grades...

Analog

Lifer
I wonder if Dr. Pizza has anything to say about this.. 😀😀

Students, tests and cash were the perfect variables to fatten high school math teacher Jeff Spires’ wallet, officials said, but administrators pulled the plug on him after several students brought his alleged pay-for-grades scheme to their attention.
Spires, who taught at Charlotte County High School in Charlotte County, Fla., was suspended without pay on Oct. 14 and resigned two weeks later.
He had been a teacher in the district since 2002 and told school officials he changed grades for money because he was having financial trouble amid a bankruptcy, arrests and jail time.
“Maybe I see the kids are as desperate as I am,” he told the school’s investigators.
According to a report issued by the school and shared by ABC affiliate WZVN in Fort Myers, Fla., Spires admitted that “he had taken money from two different math students in exchange for improving their grades in math class.”
All students had to do was staple the cash to the test or quiz they wanted Spires to amend, according to the report.
One unidentified junior reported paying the teacher as much as $40 at a time on two separate occasions in exchange for improving a couple of grades on his quizzes and tests. The student ended the quarter with a B, when he actually deserved a C for his work, the school found.
A senior also paid $15 and $30 for his grade to be improved on a quiz, officials found. However, the money did not impact his quarter grade.
“This is one of the most disturbing events I’ve seen in my 40 years,” Douglas Whittaker, Charlotte County Public Schools superintendent, told WZVN.
School officials reported that Spires did, however, turn down an offer of $200 from a senior to change her quarter grade from a B to an A, because the grades had already been recorded.

Teacher is a moron. Risk going to ass raping prison and your career for $40?

I would've demanded way more money

Given the amount of corruption taking place this day in age, this isn't surprising. To be honest, I don't really see any problem with this... The kids who are going to do poorly are probably going to do poorly anyway. So, even if Joe Moron is paying $30 for a better letter grade, it isn't going to give him a big advantage in life. The kid's that are actually studying and getting the good grades in the first place have a better chance of actually doing something with their life.

I dont see a problem with it. Buying everything from grades to laws is the American way.

Need a grade? Buy it.

Need a new law? Buy it.

Need some regulation changed? Buy it.

Need a judge for a trial? Contribute a few million to his/her reelection campaign.

LOL, some of the dirt I know about some college professors around here. I hung around, or was before I got my current GF, at a few bars near work. I also happen to work next to a big state university. The bar I went to typically had more of the professors show up and not the students because of prices. It was also a bit more upscale. So I got to drink quite a bit with the profs and hear their stories. I will say, it was quite the eye-opener in some regards and in others just affirmed suspicions I already had.

I've had students offer. My answer is "yes, but you can't afford it. There's only one option: you get whatever grade you want, but the price is 80% of the projected salary for the rest of my career, including health benefits, plus 50% of my projected pension for the remainder of my life. Only 80%, because that's my comfort level with being caught. The money would have to be placed in an off-shore account that can't be touched, seized, etc., by the US government."

Now, if only I can get 2 students to take me up on that offer. 😛

that's how you do it 😀😀😀

I'm amazed that someone would risk their job for $40. Apparently, he's not smart enough to be a teacher.

Had a college professor do something similar when I took a class over at the community college.

We had to purchased a gift card for a charity and she would give us extra credit in return. We got 0.3333...% for each dollar we donated. She did it twice during the semster, the first time she said it was for some dog rescue charity, and we had to buy gift cards from either petsmart or petco. The second time was for WEAVE and we had to get gift cards from either a major grocery store, home depot, lowes, target, or walmart. The total donation for the semester was up to $60 and 20% to the class grade. The real kicker is we didn't give the gift cards to the charity directly, nooo. We gave her the gift cards, and she assured us she would pass it on to the charity.

You could actually give her two $30 gift cards during the semester and your C grade in the class would become an A grade.

She did this for years and every year students complained about it. They finally put a stop to this 2 years after I left. She was never punished for it though, just made to stop. Sadly she passed away from ALS only a year or two after she was forced to stop though.

My uni accepted the credits from this class too. Help fullfill my GE requirements for my major.

$15-40? Staple cash to your test? LOL, no wonder he got caught.

The one who get away from this do it strictly by word-of-mouth in a small group, transactions via third party, and it costs thousands of dollars. University though, not high school.
