Maybe you're having trouble with this problem because you actually don't understand the original problem.
"One Third Z" which means one-third (1/3) of a tertiary measurement. It doesn't mean ONE of a third thing.

And, this isn't really a "math" problem. Mathematically, there are an infinite number of possibilities. Also, you need to define "real world things." Otherwise, there and incredible number of possibilities:
15 thimble fulls, plus 1 teaspoon = 1/3 handful (Bob's hands)
15 grapes + 1 madarin orange = 1/3 of a serving of fruit salad

Fifteen letters and one word equals one third of the length of this sentence. (that sentence has 63 letters. one third of that is 21 letters, which is 15 letters, plus the word "equals")

If you are going to allow the answer there:
x =1/5 inch
y = 1 inch
Z = 1 foot = 12 inches

to satisfy the original problem, then there really are an infinite number of solutions that can be constructed thus:

x = 2/5 inch
y = 2 inch
z = 2 feet

x = 3/5 inch
y = 3 inch
z = 3 feet

x = 4/5 inch
y = 4 inch
z = 4 feet

x = 5/5 = 1 inch
y = 5 inch
z = 5 feet

x = 6/5 inches
y = 6 inch
z = 6 feet

etc.
