Meh, when I got my number for the auction, I commented "hey, wouldn't it be less ambiguous if you said, "buyer's premium reduced to 10% if paying by cash or check." "What do you mean?" "Well, if you get a 3% discount, and figure it this way - on $100, you'd owe $113 with the buyer's premium. If you take a 3% discount on that, it would be less than $110, since you're getting 3% of the $13 as well. "
"Hey, you're right. That's a good idea." Nice to have smart auctioneers.
And, I really scored at the auction. Most of the fliers for the auction simply mentioned the real estate - they didn't mention the tools, etc. Everything was in excellent condition - many of the things had the manuals. So, I got:
a 16' aluminum extension ladder that I didn't need
2 electric chainsaws that I didn't need
2 electric drills (one a heavy duty 3/4" drill) that I would rarely need, since I have a nice set of cordless drills.
several rakes I don't need
A wide shop broom that I don't need
2 circular saws that I don't need
several long heavy pry bars that I already have plenty of
a garden rake (I couldn't find mine the other day)
a hay fork - the type that recently was selling for $30-$50 at another auction - and I need a good old one (anything of them manufactured in the past decade or so are crap)
a hydrostatic Cub Cadet (model 147) with a body that's in outstanding condition - and the motor sounds awesome. Needs some adjustments on the transmission though.
a 4-stroke weed eater that I don't need
an electric weed eater that I don't need
A shitload more hand tools that I don't need
a radial arm saw that I'd like to need, but have to build a shop first
A bench belt sander with the round sander part on it to - that I don't need.
And a big wheel barrow, which I laughed about - I only bought it to transport things to my vehicle. I've got a tractor with a bucket, I have a big pull-behind dump wagon for my lawn mower. So, I don't need the wheel barrow either.
Plus other power tools I don't need,
Oh, and a garden hose that I *can* use, almost immediately. I'll hook it up tomorrow.
Total: well under $300, including the premium & tax. I could turn around and easily resell the cub cadet for $600-700. Heck, I could resell most of the items within a day or so and make enough profit to buy that Tamron 150mm-600mm that I have my eye on.
Eventually, I had to walk away to avoid my wife getting mad. I regretted not buying a bunch of the stuff - it was hard to pass up a gas grill that I could have gotten for $10. - It had a brand new propane tank on it that was completely full - I could have scrapped the grill and saved money on the next time I need to refill my own.
