they say money buys happiness...
i say they're full of sh!t...
how can material things make you happy?
what good is a car, clothes, computer, stereo, cash, etc...
besides the usefulness of the items, how do they help from an emotional standpoint?
they don't...they don't do a damned thing...
fsck all this "i'm popular, i have a cool car and i'm a prep" bullsh!t...
you be popular, you be 'cool', have a blast, but i bet once you get home w/ no friends, you're lonely and unhappy...
i don't try to cover emotions w/ material items...
i need something else...someone else...
someone who understands me...
someone who likes me for me...not for my car, stereo, clothes, sh!t like that...
but for my personality...for the way i am...
is it fair to judge someone by the way they look? by the way they dress? their money?
think about it...humans nowadays are way too materialistic...
we are all ignorant, but we're too blind to see it...
'dont judge a book by its cover'.....

I hate this too but I think money buys satisfaction and not true spiritual happiness.

You live in TX? Where?

materialism... what my life revolves around j/k

I don't have any good stuff, and I don't judge a person by what he owns. I don't know what matters in my life...

<i don't try to cover emotions w/ material items>

Isn't that what alcohol was invented for???

Alchool, alternative to feeling like yourself
O Alcohol, I still drink to your health...

Don't look to the outside for satisfaction.........look to the inside, and what you might do to improve your lot.No one can make you unhappy.Only you have control over that. You will find friends and companions and people that share your ideas if you just look around you.
You gain nothing pissing and moaning about how unfair it is you don't have that new corvette and classy girl friend that the other guy has.It does you no good wondering how he got it.If you want what others have, earn it,work hard for it,set goals and accomplish them.

This world owes you nadda!

"Ask the folks addicted to chronic computer upgrading."

but UG, if a computer upgrade could give you true happiness, you would only need to do it once.

---------------------------------------------------------

The only thing money can really give you is a sense of security.

If you seek earnestly the things you think you will make you happy, you may obtain them, only to find that they do not provide the peace and happiness you sought.

I agree with Red, the world doesn't revolve around money, but when I have a new "toy" I'm always happy. Money is the most important thing in life, its a perk for putting up with all the sh1t everyone goes through.

Money does buy happiness, why do you think people are happier when they have more/cool stuff?????

But there's no replacement for people, of course.

Money and things certainly don't make me happier, but they do make my life easier. Unfortunately, money makes the world go around, it's others greed that make me unhappy.

Money can't buy everything, but it buys a hell of a lot more than poverty.

Experience tells me that people who run around whining things like "money can't buy happiness, wawa", are invariably those who don't have any.

BoberFett,

Some of them are. Just depends on whether or not they conned enough money out of the bleeding hearts that day to get stoned.

The happiness you feel that comes from things you can buy with money is always short lived. A new car becomes old, a new computer becomes outdated and eventually nearly useless. Owning material things can bring you a short term joy, but not happiness.

To keep that feeling, you need to again spend more, to contiually spend. You have not bought happiness. You are chasing happiness and looking in the wrong place for it.... matieral things.

Life isn't all about material things, but they are important. A balance between material things and other stuff (friends, family, etc) make life good.

Money makes life more comfortable. I think the goal is to strive for balance. Earn and buy what it takes to be comfortable, then don't forget about yourself. Being able to turn your back on material items and reflect on yourself, not your possessions is also a good test. I think that those who are into a major consumption of material items have limited abilities to reflect on themselves -- as a true person.

Sayings of the wise man Agur:

<< Two things I ask of you, O LORD; do not refuse me before I die: (1)Keep falsehood and lies far from me; (2) Give me neither povery nor riches. Otherwise I may have too much and disown you and say, "Who is the LORD?" Or I may become poor and steal and so dishonor the name of my God. >>

Or, to quote a more recent source, Sting says:

<< We are spirits in a material world . . . >>

:D

Since we are both material and spirit, a balance between the two is what Agur suggests we seek to attain. However, when spiritually impoverished we tend to become material gluttons. Spiritual discipline produces fairness and an industrious work ethic. Fairness and an industrious work ethic, applied over time, produce wealth. Unfortunately, in a paradox, wealth typically destroys spiritual disciplines, hence unwittingly destroying the foundation upon which lasting financial stability is based.

Red Dawn,

Thanks for your offer to take everything off our hands. However, since you don't want a Compaq, I can't help you. I knew of a member here who has a 1 GHz Compaq and a Viewsonic PF790 monitor -- I guess you're still not interested. But, taking these items from this person would mean that this person would finally have a life!
