Hello. I am about to build a dual opteron 265 workstation. The 2xx series just dropped in price and Monarch has the 265 for about $310 ea.

When I go to Monarch and buy two... will they come matched? Do they need to be matched? If so, do i have to ask specifically for that?

For some reason I think I have heard of people having issues when using non matched processors. Thanks for the help.

as long they are both opteron 265, same basic core. for instance one cant be a venice core while the other one is a newcastle core. I know the 2 cores I listed are the athlon 64 cores but im not sure what are core names for the opteron. As long they are both the same core type, it should work.

The 265 is a dual-core chip, and currently there is only one core revision used for that model. Everything else like stepping etc probably shouldn't be an issue.

Different stepping shouldnt matter at all, not if your buying 2x 265's. Hell it might still work even if you put a 265 in with a 275, but its not advisable. Same clock speed + same cache and itll be fine.

As long as it is the same cpu with the same core it will work. Stepping does not matter. A week 5 and a week 50 cpu will work together as long as they are the same model.

However, there is an exception to this, and it is unconfirmed. Tom's Hardware says they have ran a single core and a dual core processor together to run as if they were using three cpus. I am not sure if I believe Toms, but you can if you want to.
