master/slave issue

have an aging 20 g hd and installed a 160g. would have made it a master, but worried i'd lose all the info on the drive. the other reason: its a dell and i couldn't get the hard drive free to swap the cable connections to make the old one the slave.

my question then: does it matter, having a dino drive as a master. what will the slave do? will info download to it if i don't specifically ask the computer to use it?

all info appreciated.
