Master/Slave Device Order on the Ribbon

When you install a device on your ide ribbon, does it matter which order in which the devices go? ie. does the master have to be the device connected at the top of the ribbon and the slave below it?

UDMA66 and faster drives with the proper cable are supposed to be installed with the master drive on the end of the cable, but in actuality, it doesn't really make any difference.
