I believe that, in context, the idea of it being a joke is beside the point.

What motivated a White man to speak of "master race" in front of a Black woman? That answer, IMO, is where offense is taken. Even if I were to believe he meant no harm or disrespect, his... detachment makes him unfit for office.

Because people make bad jokes about sensitive topics all the time. I have no idea about this guy, maybe he is unfit I dunno, but hyper analyzing “true motives” behind every damned thing leaves the world dead and neurotic.

indeed! Could it be a primitive racist sees a "racially inferior untermensch" black woman in front of him, so primitive that the thing dominating his mind is the MASTER RACE distinction between him and her?

Bonus! He's about to deny her petition. So Slick decides to be avuncular and magnanimous in his presentation. It's just that, in doing so, he can't quite get that dang MASTER RACE distinction out of his brainpan.

Voila! A white man in a position of power makes an otherwise unexplainable MASTER RACE joke to a black woman who's before him as a supplicant.

Yeah. That guy's so racist even his attempts to be nice and inclusive are howlingly racist.

I think that's the point. I don't believe it was consciously malicious, and yet...if I had done what he had, I'd be agonizing over why the hell my mind went there in the first place in such a situation. It's not really an obvious reference to make.

Personally I don't think I'd be unforgiving of the guy _if_ he gave the impression he was seriously asking himself that question and being _genuinely_ apologetic. Doesn't sound as if he is, though.

I was a Freshman in high school when 9/11 happened. A very shocking event that took me years to get any meaningful understanding of. My Sophomore year, I was making a joke about something, and I used the analogy of two towers falling. This pissed my teacher off quite a bit, and I did not realize at first. I had no intent of making a 9/11 joke at all, and just walked away confused. It slammed into me about 15 seconds after leaving the room. I ran back to the class and tried to apologize as I felt quite bad about it. He screamed at me to leave his class.

Sometimes things are internalized in ways we do not perceive. The context I got from the video was that he was trying to work with her and explain why he was not on board with her. He tried to make a joke and failed horribly. She seemed to laugh at what he said, but, it did not matter because some other guy was offended. From what it sounds like, this guy is not a person that thinks before he speaks, but, this incident seems less racist than just stupid.

Oh god, your so right. In no way could it have been a horribly misguided attempt at him showing that he thought she was her equal by saying they were the same, and that THEY were the master race. No, it must have been a ruse to call her his equal while really meaning she was not his equal. 3D chess player he is.

Of course! Because the National Socialist, holocaust defining term MASTER RACE is what every absolutely non-racist brings to mind when trying to be "inclusive" with a black woman whom they in no way reflexively and even unconsciously consider an untermensch.

Oh, I take your point. Because nothing says "we're equal" than a white official denying a black woman her petition than a MASTER RACE joke.

Nope. Not that smart. Just racist.

Look, I'm sorry you got yelled at in HS for stupidly and cluelessly making a 9/11 "joke" in class . . . although I'm not at all surprised. People on the autistic spectrum often have trouble behaving appropriately. So I'm also not surprised at the autistic-like perseverance with which you refuse to see the obvious here. Butthurt from years ago and rightfully ashamed at your ugly and stupid gaffe, you identify. And like the guy you identify with, you lack the insight to see why.

@realibrad. Everything that Perknose wrote above in post 34 is accurate to what I also believe. And it is also why I work, as I see it, extra hard to try to reach you.

What I see all the time is the ‘two tower confused and ostracized boy’ trying to comprehend how others react to him pre that 15 minute revelation and I feel in myself as memory what it is like to suffer what I have put behind me and now only experience vicariously.

That I feel you hurt is what bothers me, not that you fail to comprehend. I see a beautiful innocent child whose essence longs for beauty fighting valiantly to make that beauty reality and I see you kicked in the face for it, like your also uncomprehending teacher.

My aim has been to find a way through the exasperation your incomprehension creates for me, a way to tell you what I believe, not that you are wrong, not that my job is to correct you, but to remove your need to be right about what you feel.

I see you wanting to prove the world is good because you need to feel it is because if life isn’t good it would be a terrible thing. Well I died trying to do the same thing. I could not keep my suffering at bay. I collapsed and gave up. It was only in the darkness of that spiritual defeat that I saw at last the Beloved I had so wanted to be real but could not prove is real, and it was that love needs absolutely only life to be, that love is being itself. I suffer for you because I believe you struggle as I once did, a need to make the good real. I think you struggle against the lies you have been told that the good you wish to exist isn’t there and it always has been and always will be. The desperate needs you feel are not necessary at all. There is only love.

I never understood why it's always white people who consider themselves the "master race." Their skin burns if they're out in the sun too long - doesn't really sound like a "master" trait. I guess that's why they stay in the basement and wear hoods...

His comment, I thought was 'The Master Race'. It included a picture that I also thought explained exactly why some might want to think that way.

If that’s what counts why have the rule in the first place? Personally I find it to be a silly one to begin with but whatever

It's our pure white pallor and attractive gait I suppose.

I tell my wife all the time that she was singularly fortunate to avail herself of the superior genetic prowess of the master race as manifested in me and now realized in our children.

She then tells me to get my round-eyed white ass out of the bedroom.

In all seriousness, I am very understanding of people who joke about such things, as it makes the silliness of it very clear. Anyone who seriously held such opinions would sound like an idiot. However, it's not appropriate to joke about it it in one's professional or official capacity.

After getting assaulted by a Trumper and getting told to get the fuck out of "his country" last month.. kinda have a daily reminder of it since my wife still has daily PTSD about it.
That is terrible. So sorry to hear of that. I hope this country can recover from the damage of Trump in the coming years.

Perhaps you don't talk to people enough. I have heard people argue their race is the best one, and it has not been limited to white people only. Some people are just dumb.

Seemed like a very poor joke to me. That said, anyone even remotely involved in any sort of politics should know that jokes can't be made anymore.

Here's a handy guide for politicians:

Knock knock jokes: probably ok

Any joke from Readers Digest: definitely ok

Any joke that contains the words "master race": definitely not ok

I have a joke too

I once strung up a darkie in a tree. Haha get it??

Its a horrible joke. One that could easily be offend even if it is sarcasm. I imagine that doing a search and having this forum come up with a result based on what you just said could cause some discomfort as well.

You may want to edit your post.

I think he should lose his position pretty much immediately.
He's basically making an underhanded statement supporting the central tenet of the Nazi's. In essence his joke (assuming it was a joke. i can't fathom it was a joke) can be distilled to the following pun said with a sly face "Hey they [the Nazis] were wrong in how they went about stuff but they weren't wrong about everything"

Not really all that funny. There are many less serious off color jokes if I made at work I'd be out instantly. This one I'd be out before I finished the sentence.
