To Scouzer-Not quite. Cache sizes have increased (On the desktop market) from 256K/128/32 (depending on processors) L2 in 1996 to some 512K today... Uh.. is that, like, 4X? If that's true, then future processors in 5 years should at most have 8 megs of cache. Tops!

256? NO FRIKKIN WAY ON THIS PLANET! (Unless you have server CPU's. HP currently has 1 CPU with 32MB L2)

well, maybe that would be true if improvements were linear. but since we all know that technology improves exponentially, who knows what the future holds. I remember seeing on Intel's website (not a direct quote, but something similar)

Actually technology improves at a linear rate.

Thus cache sizes should improve at a linear rate. You can quote me on this 5 years down the road. Then we'll see if any cache sizes above 12MB come down to the 500$ range.

take a look at this intel TimeLine

This tells you what year processors were released by intel and at what speeds.

1982 - 286/12mhz

1985 - 386/25mhz (doubled in 3 years... which already proves your theory wrong because we doubled 1.0ghz in 12 months)

1989 - 486/50mhz (doubled in 4 years)

1993 - Pentium 75/mhz (4 years )

you can look it up yourself... if advances were linear, then anyone could easily say that in 10 years we would have exactly this type of processor with exactly this size hard drive, with exactly this much ram, with exactly.... NOT POSSIBLE


 
Allright, within the past 5 years, technology has improved linearly. And I believe that trend will not change in the next 5 years.

Hmm, some people are apostrophe happy, others fail to use them completely.

I've known for years the world is full of morons. It seems that the rest of the world is finally catching up with the realization. Illegitimus non carborundum (don't let the bastards grind you down) has been my mantra for years.
