Yeah getting a generator has been something I've been thinking of biting the bullet and finally getting.

I always figure for things like hurricanes I'd rather just leave than stick around and worry about fighting for gasoline.

I'm having trouble if I want to get a portable one that runs off gas for essentials - or just get a whole-house one (generac).

I have an extra loud pull start generator. It tells the neighborhood you have power...and they dont. I actually wish it were more quiet.

I just think the big factor is... well... hurricanes, right? But if they are becoming more powerful, then it's less probable were going to stick around anyways and will likely hit the road and get a hotel. So unless you're talking CAT 1-3, generator might not be worth it.

The last time the equivalency of this (heavy freezing) happened was ~30 years ago? 1989 if I recall?

I'm trying to convince myself to get a generator too, I just can't see how I would use it enough though.
Well that’s why we’ve been talking about it for years.

after having my bedroom flooded 3 times in one summer as a kid due to power outages in thunderstorms, getting an auto-start generator would be priority numero uno when i buy a house

Apparently 26GW of gas generation is down due to fuel availability. I don’t think it’s common practice here to locate fuel oil supplies as backup at these plants, as it is in colder climates. Really looks like ERCOT made a lot of arguably reckless assumptions in their forecasting too.

Well, the generators are typically setup outside, can generators even run when it's flooded all around it?

Crazy that people won't have power for another couple of days potentially in this kind of cold.
I know Biden just did for Texas, but if anything similar happened this far north in cold months, it'd be emergency declarations immediately. That's no kind of weather to be going without heat for days...not to mention people with disabilities and medical issues having no refrigeration, etc.

yeah this is gonna be bad for people who need to run medical equipment from home

or physically can't handle the cold

Thankfully, I guess, a few years ago they fracked a gas field about 600' from my house stretching north a few miles. Since TX is soo desperate for gas and we are on the same grid no power outage for us, two streets over on a different grid though it's lights out for almost 24 hours now.

However I am filling water buckets now as the city appears to have lost water, at least we can boil snow I guess.

The additional 5 inches of snow or 1/4 inch of ice tomorrow should help the situation.

It's too bad Texas never gets any sun or anything. Otherwise solar power would be an option. 😛
much less sun in the winter, which is when you really need it.
Natural gas is the way to go, if its available in your area. Some people rely exclusively on electricity and thats rough.

Here yeah natural gas makes sense mostly because our hydro prices are so high, but you would think a place like Texas would have a massive solar infrastructure or at very least, that their fossil fuel infrastructure would not crap itself if it gets cold lol.

no with regards to environmentalism Texas is kinda stunted.

on the other hand, Texas works. California does not. So, think about that.

I always figured it could be a huge advantage to live nearby a hospital one could presume they are less likely to ever turn off those grids.

Anyhow, looks like I survived yesterday without them turning off our power (or doing rollouts). Here in my area it will at least briefly reach above freezing during the day. Hopefully they are upgrading/fixing some of the other energy sources today.

usually northern places can deal with large amounts of snow. It takes a very serious storm to get them to declare an emergency.

Back in 2010 we were hit with over a meter of snow and came very close to declaring a state of emergency. It was something we don't normally see.

back in 1978 a monster blizzard hit the Great Lakes region like a freight-train.

Great Blizzard of 1978 - Wikipedia

Michigan, Ohio and Indiana declared states of emergency. It was very bad here in London Ontario. We were sent home from school at 10:00AM and I had never seen that much snow before as a kid.
