Highways are a complete nightmare in snowy/icy weather. Way too many different driving "styles". This is absolutely on another level though.

2WD and AWD cars both brake on 4 wheels.

Many people with SUVs seem to not get that and do stupid shit.

Looks like this was mainly in the express lanes, 80 MPH. First time it has iced since they were installed I believe so I'm guessing TXDOT has a new area of concern for next time.

Exactly, and very few people bother with winter or snow tires, even up here in New England. I laugh at stuck AWD SUVs when I drive by in a RWD car with proper limited slip diff and snow tires. Though usually I just avoid going out because people can’t be trusted in the snow and I don’t want them to wreck my car.

It would be nice if winter tires could be mandated in northern states, and apparently Texas, like in Scandinavian countries (is that still a thing there?). But free travel between state lines and the fact that that wouldn’t make sense in many southern states kind of ruins it.

I give people that can go 10+ years without having to worry about ice a little leeway on not realizing the hazard exists. Generally speaking I expect truckers to experience a wider range of road conditions not to mention having a network of CB radios to communicate hazards unless those have all disappeared.

They used brine mostly, it didn't work obviously. That's what I was getting at in that this is a new section of road. If it is going to be an ongoing area of concern special attention will have to be paid like it is in other known problem areas. Also this is a toll road and I'm not actually sure who has responsibility to take care of it.

Seems reasonable, just looked it up these express lanes are operated by TxDOT so they should have had the same treatment as the main lanes where you can see people spinning their tires in the video.

Freezing rain is just bad news period, driving 80 mph in freezing rain warning area is nuts. I imagine they don't get much freezing rain there but still.

I remeber being in Phoenix once,
a thunderstorm hit and the cars didn't not slow down at all. Some hydro planed.

In Italy there are many northern provinces where within certain dates, you are not allowed to drive on summer tires. I think you just get a fine and I'm not sure how well enforced it is.

In my country (Switzerland), it's not obligatory, but the insurance will pay jackshit if you get in an accident with summer tires and your ability to drive was negatively influenced by the cold temperatures (mostly ice and snow really). Or if you block the highway and such a fault can be found (or even just forgetting to filll up the tank), you can also get fined.
