The Lamborghini Super Trofeo Cup saw a massive accident during Round 4 of the season. From what we can tell, the number 22 Gallardo LP560-4 driven by Giorgio Bartocci got off into the gravel on the last turn before the front straight. It's unclear whether Bartocci was nudged by another racer or whether a mechanical failure caused the slide, but either way, the car hit the wall at considerable speed and nearly disintegrated on impact.

The driver's side door sprung open as the car slid down the tarmac, and Bartocci could be seen flailing outside the vehicle. When it finally came to a stop, the Raging Bull turned into a raging fireball. Fire crews initially took longer than expected to pull the driver from the wreckage and were seen using underpowered fire extinguishers to battle the blaze. The FIA is expected to investigate the incident. Amazingly, Bartocci survived the ordeal and is currently in intensive care.

Lamborghini canceled the remainder of the event and rounds six and seven have been indefinitely nixed as well. Hit the jump for a video of the incident.

dammmmmmn... i can't believe how badly they reacted to the car being on fire... hell, it took a guy with no protective equipment to pull the driver out.. WTF is wrong with them?

I can't believe the bad excuse of a fire extinguisher they were using. These guys really need to step up the safety crews equipment and training.

Cheers to the guy who pulled the driver out...hope he and the driver are both ok. Scary shit.
Driver's in okay shape, considering.

The driver is reportedly awake and off a respirator with broken ribs, a broken leg and second-degree burns over 40% of his body.
The fact that he is off the vent and only has second-degree burns is pretty good, considering. Hopefully the burns burns were in non-vital areas that are easy to keep clean.

Holy shit. I've never seen an impact like that just disintegrate a car, damn. Guess Carbon Fiber isn't as strong as they claim. :x

Carbon fiber is very brittle, and shatters in impacts. During the shattering, it fragments into thousands of shards 100 times sharper than the sharpest piece of broken glass.

It's about the nastiest thing you can imagine when it breaks, x 100.

However, in tension it is stronger than just about anything out there.

Yeah, when I buy my Ferarri I'm going to ask for plastic paddle shifters. Fuck the weight saved, I'd rather keep my head when one of their carbon fiber trim pieces splinters off and tries to decapitate me. :X
