This was a fairly weak album from them. It's completely beyond any doubt now that they will never come close to reproducing Mezzanine, an album literally magnitudes better than Heligoland and surely one of the better to come out in the 90's by any group in any genre. A true masterpiece. Atlas is the only song on Heligoland worth listening to, and remixes (by other people) of Paradise Circus.

Gui Boratto remix is amazing.

But like Doppel said, nothing will ever come close to Mezzanine.

Agreed with the Boratto mix. Disagree with nothing coming close to Mezzanine - Blue Lines is imho just as good.

OP if you like Massive Attack and Portishead, check out Tricky's solo work (Tricky was an early member of MA), UNKLE, Thievery Corporation, Zero 7, and Bonobo. Bonobo's "Black Sands" album from last year is killer, as is Zero 7's older "Simple Things."

Well yeah Blue Lines obviously, but Mezzanine is just one step above it.

Can anyone recommend some more bands I may like? I love the Portishead albums

Tricky, DJ Shadow/Unkle (only the earlier stuff, he's pop now), DJ Spooky, DJ Krush, Amon Tobin (practically any late 90's early 00's records on the Ninjatune Label), DJ Food, Plaid, etc.
