If you live in the Southeast and use AT&T or do business with a company that is a client of AT&T... you probably noticed spotty or non-existent services for several hours. We are talking some gas stations unable to pump gas and the local mall only being able to take cash. Even some 911 problems.

AT&T says that is was a hardware failure... but it was a massive geographic area. Are they telling us there is no redundancy? The latest word it was a fiber cut in West Tennessee.

Scary since At&T has recently suffered similar cuts in California.

I'd bet it was just the sheer volume of people rushing in to take advantage of the awesome "deals" they are offering now after bringing directv into the mix. I mean, who could possibly resist more overpriced bundled crap with more long term contracts and early termination fees? ;)

Seems strangely coincidental, but I guess if you have fiber lines all over the country the chances of one (or more) getting damaged at a given time increases.

A sister company got knocked off the internet because of this. They also lost their landline phones.

And these are big freaking fiber lines and it is understandable how they could mistakingly get snipped. But service was affected for nearly 7 hours... kind of scary to think the system is that vulnerable.

The local news was interviewing people without service and they were saying thinks like they were having trouble finding places to eat. That part was funny but there was real economic damage. Like I said the local mall could not process credit card payments and some gas stations shut down. Me, well I figured out a place to eat....and thank goodness for the Here+ app that lets you use GPS guidance in offline mode.

When I was in Orange County, CA a few weeks ago for work, there local stories about the fiber cables being cut at several different locations...wonder if there is more to this story???
