Thought to be all but defeated, Laurent Gbagbo's forces fought back Saturday, retaking control of Ivory Coast's all-powerful state-run television network that has been the embattled president's voice in his standoff with Alassane Ouattara.

Fighting raged again in Abidjan, the nation's largest city and its commercial center, as a disturbing account illustrated the bloody nature of Ivory Coast's crisis.

The International Committee of the Red Cross reported the massacre of at least 800 people in the western town of Duekoue.

The agency's team arrived in Duekoue on Thursday, said spokesman Kelnor Panglungtshang in Abidjan.

"They saw the bodies on the streets," he told CNN. "There were so many."

Humanitarian crisis that looks to be getting worse.

How can the US stand by and let this happen? Precedent has been set.

Yeah, the precedent is if you have something worthwhile we'll either buy it from you or take it anyway we can. If that means killing Bambi or killing the hunter after Bambi we're not picky.

What can we do here? In Libya we could blow up Khadafi's tanks and planes. Seems like this would require "boots on the ground".

Did the African Union ask NATO to intervene??

Stop asking logical, pertinent questions, you'll spoil the mood in this thread.

The African union?
Who are hell are they? Did they give us the right to intervene in Libya?

Seems like Libya itself would have to give us permission to intervene in their cuontry...

Should we now intervene in any country where an international body says its ok? As long as we don't put "boots on the ground"?

Precedent is for court rooms. As a nation we're fully within our right to act erratically as long as it's in our own best interest. Though that would seem to preclude any involvement in Libya...

“When the entire international community almost unanimously says that there is a potential humanitarian crisis about to take place,” Mr. Obama told reporters in Chile, “we can't simply stand by with empty words; we have to take some sort of action.”

There is no potential crisis... it is and has been an internationally recognized humanitarian crisis for at least a couple months now. Thousands slaughtered, hundreds of thousands fleeing.

Well, Mr. Obama, will it be empty words, or action?

Or did you not really mean that?

Are you imply we don't have people on the ground in Libya? :\

And what if they did ask us to intervene? Does that mean we need to borrow or print more money we otherwise don't have to police that country, too?

We have CIA on the ground.

You know the military has to be paid regardless right? Complaining about the costs of bombs that we already bought, gasoline, etc = stupid platitudes. These actions are nothing like occupations, which dwarf any bullet costs

You still didn't answer my question.

They are paid a salary. They are also paid more when deployed, as is the case now.

We also replace bombs and missiles that we use. And fuel.

But I guess we could adopt your line of thinking... the Iraq/Afghanistan war would cost next to nothing. Everyone was already going to be paid, and bullets/bombs are insignificant.

Stop using your brains. Strawman + knee jerk makes for a much better thread.

Please describe the straw man argument, in detail, instead of claiming that one exists and then contributing nothing of substance.

See Post #7. Libya is nothing like Ivory in necessary execution of intervention.

Except recruitment had to be increased to fund the wars, and the amount spent on military hardware completely dwarfs the missiles and fuel for Libya. This is a few week long military action, not an action. Pretending they're the same for the sake of politics is ridiculous.
