how is massachusetts like..particularly Cambridge? I'm really really interested in going to MIT (getting accepted is another question ) but how is the evironment like there? such as air, pollution, or diverse people and crime rates, etc.

I live a little south of Boston, and it's nice. Mass has it's ugly areas, and it's nice areas - you get the best of both worlds.

Air? Pollution? It's just city air--not noticeably bad, but not fresh mountain air or anything. Boston/Cambridge is a great college area. As far as crime, I'm sure there are bad areas of Boston, but the MIT campus and surrounding areas of Cambridge and Boston are pretty safe.

The weather might bother you if you're from somewhere warm. I don't mind the winter myself, I just don't like it when it stays cold all the way up through April.

Personally, I think Massachusetts is a pretty crappy state. Going to college here is just fine, but I'd hate to live here.

I lived in california and now am living in southern ohio for 3 years so I'm not too worried about the winter..I hope.

but what do you guys mean by the "bad sides"?

I lived in MA for 18 years. Now I live in upstate NY and have been for about 2 years. No way in hell MA is a crappy state compared to NY, getting out of here as quick as I can finish my degree. Nero, I've heard go to grad school at MIT not undergrad because the students don't like it too much. Anyhow, my cousin goes there if you want to get a first hand opinion.

Nero: I jsut moved from Cambridge. Not because of anything bad but my new job was a bit out of the way. It a great place and MIT is a 10 minute walk from Boston across the beautiful Mass. Ave bridge which spans the Charles River. From there you are about another 10 minute walk from Kenmore Square which is right off of Fenway Park. Kenmore Square is on the Eastern part of the Boston University campus (my brother's alma mater) which has some of the hottest babes there. Go for it dude. PM if you want more info.
