Wow, my first playthrough took me around 45 hours. I did absolutely everything, talked to everyone, hacked every machine/object, explored every corner of every planet, base, city, etc. A couple times towards the end of the game I thoroughly went through the Galactic Map and made sure I had visited every planet I had available. I think there are some that you may not necessarily get quests for?

I keep saying it, but one of these days I'll get back to this game and finish my second and start a third playthrough.

Yea, my first one was 38 hours. I drove around a lot of the planets looking for the hidden points of interest. I'm pretty sure that's a big part of the difference in game lengths between me and many others.

Definitely. I visited all the points of interest and anything that came up along the way. It was extremely tedious/boring, but I still did it. I do like driving the Mako but I don't like how there are huge mountainous walls extending for the majority of the explorable area on each planet.

That was exactly why I didn't do that... I got really tired of doing the same thing on every planet. I didn't mind the Mako, but could they have thrown a little more variety with these planets?

For some reason I didn't find it extremely tedious/boring, but it certainly was far from the most entertaining part of the game. I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment and an XP whore. :p

Ok so I was complaining to a friend about this the other day. Who in their right mind thought that driving the mako around on 100 identical planets would be fun? Sure, it's fun at first, but gets old quick. Especially because a majority of the objectives are top of huge mountains that are hard as shit to scale.
I wish they would have had less planets and more stuff on each planet to make it more worthwhile to drive all around.

Joker can land the mako in a tiny little space on Illos, but can't land you beside an objective on a planet?!

If the planets weren't all so mountainous, I definitely would have enjoyed the tedium a bit more. Disintegrating Geth with the Mako canon never gets old. Spending 30 minutes trying to climb a mountain to move 20ft does.

I don't get why you guys did those missions.

In RPGs, there are a few reasons to do side quests:

1 - Money - in Mass Effect you have an assload so that isn't an option
2 - Branching storylines - aside from a lot of reading, there isn't much depth to these
3 - Rare/Elite Items - the game has none, really, and the ones that are can be bought
4 - XP - this is the only reason to do these missions, but since XP stays across playthroughs, I would personally rather go through the main storyline a 2nd time than all sidequests once

Because I'm a completionist/achievement whore and like to see everything a game has to offer (especially when I really like the game). The planet with the space monkeys (Eletania) had a sphere (Prothean Artifact) that if you found the key for (I believe one of the monkeys held it) would reveal insight into the Protheans. Just boring old text, but I thought it was cool.

Why am I doing them now? Ally achievements, that is it. I'm playign through on hardcore now, then insanity while trying to get the last 4 ally achievements.

There are achievements (and rewards that go with them) that require you to do a certain amount of side-quests. The Completionist is easy, but try getting the ally achievement for Liara (latest ally acquired) without strategically skipping much of the Citadel the first time through and then doing a ton of side-quests.

Plus, going through it the first time you don't know whether or not they are going to have interesting storylines. I thought the Cerberus, Biotic Commune, Hostage, and Geth hunting side-quests were all worthwhile. It was worth it visiting all of them once just to know which were good and which were bad.

I did tried to do all the side quests the first time through, just becuase I wanted to get the "whole" game experience. On subsequent play-throughs I have not done all or even many of the side quests.

I'm on my fifth play-through now, trying to complete all the achievments - playing through as an Engineer this time to get the "tech" achievements. I will be skipping the majority of the sidequests, but may do some to get the requisite number of skill uses to get the Sabatoge, Hacking, Damping, and Overload achievments.

What do you guys think are the most useful(powerful) and most useless(worthless) talents in ME.

My picks are:

Useful - Singularity

Useless - Neural Shock

Useful - Throw, Lift (haven't had a chance to really play with Singularity), Electronics, Decryption (if only to complete some quests and get in to locked containers).
Useless - Warp, Stasis

Haven't used singularity yet much either.

But my favorites so far are Lift/Throw. Especially when used in combo's!

I thought it was hilarious in Virmire when the Krogan would charge me and I'd use lift on them and they would go sailing over the rooftops.

useless:
Stasis, Warp, AI Hacking, Neural shock

Hey, doesn't the DLC come out on Monday? Maybe I can finally get myself to resume my second playthrough.

If you guys like lift and throw, you have to get singularity. It's fun to use in areas with explosives around, it will suck everything up together and explode.

I actually thought warp was pretty useful, it does a lot of damage over time. I agree that Stasis is pretty useless, but can be used in a pinch if you are hurting. AI Hacking is also pretty useless, although it can be fun to use.

Disagree. As a fairly combat-weak engineer on my insanity playthrough, nothing saved my butt from a charging Krogan like using Neural Shock to pop a blood vessel in his head. It would send him to the floor for 5 seconds every time and let my team pump him full of bullets.

EDIT: I didn't find any one power completely useless, but Stasis was pretty easily my least favorite. Freezing someone? Cool, great. Having them be immune WHILE frozen? Boring!

Yeah, I guess I can see as an Engineer it might be useful at times. My playthrough as Engineer I took the Shotgun talent from my previous Solly playthrough, so always had the shotgun handy in close combat situations.

How many playthroughs with one character did it take you to get to 60?

I've done three total, but all started from level 1 in order to play as the different classes.

I got it on my second playthrough on hardcore... I played through the game 4 times total mostly for the ally achievements.

It took me 5 playthroughs, and 3 different characters to get to 1000.

It took me 2 playthroughs with my second character to get to 60.

You level up a lot faster after you start racking up the acheivments. I think there are 3 or 4 achievments that give you 10% more XP, but I can't remember which ones those are.

I went and looked up the XP adding achievments.

Power Gamer: Reach Level 50, get 5% more XP
Extreme Power Gamer: Reach Level 60, get 10% more XP
Completionist: Complete majority of quests, get 10% more XP

So you get 25% more XP if you have those achievments.

So who's accomplished the confrontation for the Romance Subplot? I've tried twice now, but both times I've mysteriously fallen out of favor with Ashley, and then no confrontation ever happens.

what? you mean the achievement for the romance sub plot? As far as I know that is only done with Liara, not Ashley.

I can confirm that it works for Liara, Ashley, and Kaiden (don't ask).
