amazing and deep storyline

pretty fun gameplay

Haha, oh wow. You just made my day.

The only thing ME had going for it was the graphics (shallow pro), character customization (decent feature, but could have been more developed), and dialogue.

The sad thing is that the dialogue choices were pretty poorly implemented, especially compared to the Bioware games of old.

EDIT: Still, I'll buy ME2 since I'm a sucker for Bioware games as most recent games seem to lack any character or setting depth.

The storyline was amazing, a real rarity in a lot of games and the gameplay was FPS enough to be fun with enough RPG elements to add a little but not too much complexity. Run n gun with an awesome story... Great game.

ME was a decent game, certainly better than most crap on the market, but its a far cry from Bioware's best. Will I buy ME2? Probably . . . when its 19.99 on Steam, assuming there are no nasty DRM issues to worry about.

Edit - I take it that Mass Effect will be topping out at the 1.01a patch despite the remaining issues?

The storyline was amazing, if by amazing you mean amazingly cliche. You must not read much science fiction. ME just took generic science fiction plot devices and stuck them everywhere.

The gameplay was not a good hybrid of FPS and RPG. The FPS aspects were disappointed, and the RPG aspects lacked depth.

it's a great RPG but frankly there has been far better ones. KOTOR 1, Deus Ex 1 just to name a couple. these are older games though. I haven't played many especially memorable games since 2005.

The story was great.

The character facial customization added even more immersion.

The actual history and scientific explanations for the whole backdrop (FTL, mass effect, prothean discovery, species explanation and history) made sense and didn't seem too sci-fi.

KOTR has pretty decent graphics even by today's standards. It had the best storyline after Planescape torment of any rpg i've ever played, and the best star wars story i've ever seen. at any rate yes ME has been one of the best rpgs in the past few years. i dont know why everyone is critizing that its not THE best, i mean seriously, it makes the top 5 easiliy in the past 3-4 years.

I will buy Mass Effect when they sell copies (digital or hard copy) without the DRM. I did enjoy the 360 version (only got into it a little ways) and would like to try the PC one.

I wish they would do more dlc for the pc. That one episode they did (while short) was very well done - much better than all the quests in the original game (wish the game had had more quests alone that line).

Yep, great game, much like many other console ports of last year. Such a shame devs and publishers are moving away from PC development. Now many publishers wait 5-6 months before PC release to reduce piracy impacting console sales. Next step will be not bothering to port to PC at all.

Actually the tendency is going towards making PC ports... even if they are shabby.

Heh, i sure as hell dont.

Then all of the old, tired ideas must have seemed bright and ingenious to you.

dude, most of us are'nt sci-fi gurus, the story of KOTR & ME were top notch for me and alot of other players. YOU are part of the minority, not us. yes we're computer geeks, not sci-fi geeks.

perhaps so, but that doesn't change the fact that both the story and universe of Mass Effect is rather derivative, not that I expected some grand inspiring sci-fi saga from the first unique sci-fi franchise attempt by a company that has always specialized in fantasy genre games. I will say that it's still a good game though.

Leave KoTOR out of this. I love that game.

Never did I say that I was a sci-fi guru  I encountered most of the concepts I mentioned through other sci-fi videogames (or tabletop games - I'm looking at your WH40K). I'm just saying that it makes sense for those who have never encountered a science fiction plot or setting to find it interesting the first time. Still, it doesn't make ME any more original than generic sci-fi plot #12.

The thing about the sci-fi with Mass Effect is that all the descriptions (on the Codex) about the Mass Effect world made sense. They didn't just introduce warp drive and say, "the warp drive core makes faster than light travel possible." They actually explain in the Codex how this is possible and the best part is that it makes sense given what we know about technology.

Even the explanations for the different species' tone of voice and how it came to be because of that species' homeworld terrain.

The scientific explanations gave me a more immersive feel for the whole game universe.

I spent so much time reading that damn thing. Maybe its time to reply again. Last time I got too good with the sniper rifle and would barely break a sweat.

Same here haha. I still haven't checked out the DLC either.

They need to release a deactivation tool.

If you're looking for BioWare-style games, Jade Empire and KOTOR come to mind.

One of the best in recent years? Absolutely.

Best ever? Hardly.

Better than it off the top of my head:

Baldur's Gate series
Half-Life series
Final Fantasy series
Warcraft series
