Alright, so I said it.

This game is the best game I've ever played. What other games out from '05 beyond are like it?

I know these are older than Mass Effect but if you haven't played Knights of the Old Republic or KOTOR 2 you should give those a shot. Basically ME's predecessors.

Mass Effect = okay to meh. I was pretty disappointed with it. Especially compared to previous Bioware games.

Beyond '05?
Nothing.

Before '05?
Damn near everything.

And while I love it for the story and characters it was not the best game ever. My measure of a good game is the GAMEPLAY!
Which people laugh at now but back in the good old days thats what we liked to do with our games, play them.

Nowadays its more like those interactive movies they used to have for Sega CD and CDi. Which is funny because those things bombed horribly. Who knew it would be the wave of the future?
Mass Effect has a lot of that because they werent allowed to make a fun game for all the idiot console fanboys. Its still OK, and the epic story is enough to make you play it once. I seriously hope they fix the game play in ME2. Either improve the shooting action or, better yet, make it command-based like KOTOR. They also need to fix the inventory and upgrading. It might be acceptable for a gamepad controller and limited resolution, but its not good enough for a mouse & keyboard.

I find that with Mass Effect, you either love it or you hate. Or you think it's ok. I played KotOR and KotOR2 and loved Mass Effect WAY more than either of them. I loved Mass Effect just overall. It's amazing. Other people don't think it was very good at all :p Luckily they are making it a trilogy I think.

Its not the best game ever but its got an amazing and deep storyline which i appreciate in a game, that combined with pretty fun gameplay makes it a winner in my view. Thats not even taking into account the choices you get in the dialogue, spoken dialogue! Roll on mass effect 2, maybe there will be a visit to geth territory or at least a partial explanation behind the whole reaper thing.

I started yesterday, and am enjoying the setting - spending 75% of the game in dialog/conversation with different entities, learning of the vast Transverse backdrop they established is refreshing.
But it also makes me want to reload KOTOR I & II.

Also finished Assassin's Creed yesterday, which was a great experience up until the end.

I thought it was a great game if you cut out most of the useless side quests on the generic random planets.

Fallout 3 is somewhat similar, in that it is a FPS RPG set in the future with the ability to pause and plan out your attack - If those are the characteristics you are trying to reproduce.

The Witcher is similar in that it has a very believable storyline and backgrop - It has a similar immersion to Mass Effect.

Max Payne is another one that has a good immersion factor, like Mass Effect has, although it is a pure linear FPS and not a RPG at all.

Those are the two games I can think of that have a similar immersion to Mass Effect. HL2 would be another, but I prefer the Witcher and Max Payne for immersion.

I enjoyed the game, but it had flaws and I would rank it below the KOTOR games from Bioware.

Yep, great game, much like many other console ports of last year. Such a shame devs and publishers are moving away from PC development. Now many publishers wait 5-6 months before PC release to reduce piracy impacting console sales. Next step will be not bothering to port to PC at all.

I wouldn't go as far as saying Mass Effect is the best game ever, but it was good, no doubt about it. But I always had the impression that you didn't had much to do in it, combat was very simple and linear and the rpg implementation was pretty poor.

Haha, oh wow. You just made my day.

The only thing ME had going for it was the graphics (shallow pro), character customization (decent feature, but could have been more developed), and dialogue.

The sad thing is that the dialogue choices were pretty poorly implemented, especially compared to the Bioware games of old.

EDIT: Still, I'll buy ME2 since I'm a sucker for Bioware games as most recent games seem to lack any character or setting depth.

The graphics were not impressive. The textures and level geometry reminded me a lot of Unreal 2 from 2003, with some post-processing filters added on (some of which made the game look worse IMO), but the game still didn't run that well.

I liked the game though. The gameplay and combat were lacking in many respects, but the great story and atmosphere made it worth at least one playthrough.

Mass Effect is an amazing game, but I do agree that it is not Bioware's best work, but Dragon Age will be sweet (I hope).

Mass Effect is not the best game ever, at all... That game is boring as it gets.

I haven't played KOTOR I or II, but I can't go back and play old games. The graphics just kill it for me... (I'm not saying ME had great graphics, btw)

The story was great.

The character facial customization added even more immersion.

The actual history and scientific explanations for the whole backdrop (FTL, mass effect, prothean discovery, species explanation and history) made sense and didn't seem too sci-fi.
