Has this been confirmed? I had heard that they 'disappeared,' but that they may appear in the story (nothing solid), and several of them are in the trailer...

Anyone who survived ME1 will show up in ME2 (2 of them even rejoin your party). The way Shepard dies makes it somewhat clear that the important people survived.

Haven't been looking at previews? It's how ME2 starts - they've made this very clear in just about every trailer and preview. Shepard gets killed, and the resurrected.
