Mass Effect 2 PS3 using Mass Effect 3 engine

"One of the first things you're going to see is improved graphics," said Houston. "We actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and then used that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. We took the content, the story, all the other assets that made Mass Effect 2, and we put it into the Mass Effect 3 engine. That's what we're actually delivering."

Nice, having played through ME2 twice on the PC, I haven't really touched any of the DLC. Since it's all coming with the PS3 version, I'll probably pick this up and play through again.

I'm going to triple-dip with this game, and that might be a first for me too. Yes I've played through ME2 on the PC (once), on the X360 (twice) and will, once again, play through this game on the PS3.

I just cannot resist. 🙂

"But this game costs $60 when you can get it for $15!!!!!"

Interesting they are using the new engine. I might have to take a look at some comparisons and see just how updated the engine it.

Why? I can't imagine the experience would be different enough to warrant buying the same game twice, let alone three times.

Also, the new engine will still probably be 720p and 30fps on the PS3, just because of the limits of its 2006 hardware.

ME2 on a PC will run at 1920x1080 at 60+ fps on even the $130 graphics cards these days. Unless you want the big-TV experience it will probably still look much better on a PC.

Yeah, it's cool that the PS3 version will be using the ME3 engine but that was probably the easiest way for Bioware to get from point A (PC, 360) to point B (PS3) since the work was already being performed.

While the PS3 version does look better as a result, the difference isn't significant enough IMHO that it would have me picking it up after I've already played 2 on the 360 or PC. It's still essentially the same game you've already played.

Regardless, this is great news for PS3 owners who haven't played it because they don't have a 360 or a PC capable of running the game.

Also, the PS3 will get an interactive comic book version of Mass Effect 1 that you can go through, making decisions that will carry over into the game itself, so they get to catch up on the storyline and also have a semi-custom experience. Seems like a great idea.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. This is very good for PS3 owners who haven't played this before. I just couldn't see myself picking it after having played it on either the PC or PS3 with the decisions that carried over from ME1 to ME2 and eventually to ME3.

Yeah, so far, Bioware is one of those companies that can really do no wrong, and always seem to go above and beyond what's required to get my $60. This is just another sign that they haven't changed in that respect.

Whoa, that is pretty genius if that is true.

I'll check out the PS3 demo, but I highly doubt I'll triple dip. I doubt the PS3 version will look better than the PC version...

Not a new new engine so much as a further developed engine from ME2. It still uses the Unreal Engine 3 as its base.

Oh, okay. I was about to be really surprised and excited to see something not UE3.

I should have known, lol.

"Given that the first Mass Effect title will remain a Xbox 360 exclusive, EA and BioWare will include an interactive comic with the PS3 copies to help bridge the storylines. The choices made in the comic will carry over into your Mass Effect 2 playthrough."

Fail. The beauty of ME2 was being able to tie in your first game.

Mass Effect 2 is on my "to play" list this winter. I'll be getting it for PC though. You can't just decide to make it multi-platform a year later then do a half arsed job of it.

I've never seen Bioware do a "half arsed job" of any game.

Considering they legally cannot bring Mass Effect 1 to the PS3, this isn't a fail, it's them going out of their way to help bring PS3 gamers up to speed on the Mass Effect universe.

I believe I read somewhere that there were six important plot decisions that carried over. Six.

It barely mattered.

Because I absolutely love the series. I've played through the first game 7 times, and the second game 3 times because I just love being in that world.

I'm also probably crazy.
