So when you do this, you get the special loyal powers. It says you also get the points spent in that power? But when I do it I only get 1 bar, not all four like the loyal character has.

Am i reading it wrong? ",and any points already spend transfer to the newly-selected bonus power"

If you train something and then decide to change it the points will go on the new skill.

It's as l0cke wrote, the points you spend on your character's bonus talent aren't lost and reused in the new talent you select. You can do this as many times as you wish, as long as you got the EZ required. So for example select a different power before a mission, that you think will be more useful than the current one (though honestly I never bothered, always took Reave :p ).

I ended up picking barrier to use on my soldier, and it felt hilariously overpowered. I'd just charge into groups of enemies and keep recasting barrier every 12 seconds (cooldown period) to stay alive.

I felt weird about barrier. I would throw it on and still get pulverized, but I only had a few points into it and was playing on Hardcore. The weird part for me was that my shields could be completely gone and I'm at death's door, but I'm still glowing blue. It was an odd visual cue that didn't register with me.

On higher difficulties (insanity for sure), allowing to be shot at for more than 2 seconds means you're dead. And no barrier/fortification or other survival skill will help with that. Only Tech Armor that stuns all around you once it goes down, helps a bit. Still, you're toast anyway if you can't reapply it immediately and run for cover :)
