Neil Prescott, Maryland mass shooting suspect, arrested

Authorities in Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties have foiled what they believe would have been a mass shooting by a man who was about to be fired from his job, police sources tell ABC 7 News.

Law enforcement sources tell ABC 7's Brad Bell that the suspect, Neil Prescott, 28, was taken into custody in Crofton on Thursday night. According to officials, the man was facing termination from his job as a subcontractor for Pitney Bowes, the document, mailing and shipping company.

“I am a joker and I’m gonna load my guns and blow everybody up,” he allegedly said, according to documents.

He was also wearing a T-Shirt that said: "Guns don't kill people. I do," when authorities took him into custody. Prescott is being held for a psychiatric evaluation and charges are pending.

"We can't measure what we prevented here," Prince George's County Police Chief Mark Magaw said. "We averted a significant...and violent episode."

yep. So now we are going to start arresting gun owners for simply saying they are going to shoot someone? I say it all the time on XBL...

So he didn't do anything, he made a threat that no one can really back up and they're putting him through psych tests to make sure he's "OK" just because they found some guns at his place? Ridiculous. Well lets hope they actually did nab a crazy guy and not just some overractionary non-sense.

Y'all are a bunch of morons.

Threatening to kill a group of people can actually be a felony in and of its self. Its called making a terroristic threat. All it takes are witnesses testifying against you to convict you for it.My wifes half brother is on 10 years probation for it, he spent 7 days in a juvenile psych facility before being transferred to adult jail and then released on bond. Indicted a month later. Pled out morning of trial. Got 10 years deferred adjudication. And his "threats" were extremely vague and he had no real means to follow through with them.

Second, all they need is suspicion that you are a danger to your self or others and they can do a pysch hold. Its an extremely low burden and threatening to kill a group of people MORE THAN MEETS that burden.

Making that threat to someone is a felony in a lot of jurisdictions. Its either a felony/class A misdemeanor in almost every jurisdiction.

OMG why didn't anyone do something after he made such an obvious statement of his intentions? these murders could have easily been prevented!

So they claim they stopped mass murder because someone who owned guns made empty threats?

Next step they are going to arrest people for DUI Friday on lunch for saying they are going to get shit faced on the weekend.


edit: If saying those things is a felony or class A misdemeanor, why don't more kids on XBL get arrested?
 
Yes I realize threatening people can be an offense, except there is no proof of anything yet. Simply someones word against his and they've already searched his house and are declaring they stopped some crazy potential crime when really nothing is truly known at the moment. Overreaction.

Saying you are going to get drunk on the weekend is not a crime.

Making bomb threats, or other threats of killing a group of people is a crime. And this isn't a recent development. Terroristic Threat laws have been on the book for decades.

You have absolutely no idea of what you are talking about. All it takes are credible witnesses to convict someone of terroristic threats.

Dude is getting fired. Dude rages to a co-worker about his boss. Gets arrested for making threat about his boss to a co-worker.

If thats a crime, then i'm sure everyone one has at one point been guilty of this in their lives.

He made more than a threat towards his boss. He said he was going to load up his guns and blow everyone up. And in this case, there appear to be multiple phone calls and multiple threats.

And yes its a crime. Ignorance of the criminal code is not a defense.

You threaten to kill a single person. That is not necessarily a crime, but can be and would most definitely get you convicted of murder if the person ended up dead. You threaten to kill a group of people at a specific location, and yeah that is a crime.

Prove he said it, until then it's hearsay and I would never put someone away for "terroristic threats" simply because someone said they made them. Prove it or shut up. From everything we have in front of us, this is hearsay and they overreacted by searching and ceasing his possessions.

PS load up his guns then blow them all up? Sure that doesn't sound like it could have been made up in a whim at all by someone scared. I'm going to throw out a scenario and lets see what you think. Guy gets fired, boss knows the guy is a fire arms enthusiast and also maybe a little on the "nutter" side. Scared because maybe he made this guy mad he calls the cops and puts in the threat. You know to make sure this guy doesn't kill him. Does that sound far fetched right now? Not really, people are always emotional little babies whenever something terrible happens so it's perfectly reasonable to me to assume this as one of the possibilities until FURTHER information comes out.

All they have is a phone call he made to a co-worker. That will not hold up in court. At worst, he gets charged with a Class G Felony for making a threat and gets maybe 2 years in jail and a $25,000 dollar fine. More likely, he gets a $1,000 fine and 100 hours of community service.

And when he gets out of jail whats to stop him from killing his boss anyway?
