Generally its about how many members the religion has. I personally think its values are much more important.

I'm 53 years old. I've been an atheist since I was 18. I have told friends, family, and co-workers just that when the topic came up. I have been mocked and told I was going to hell or that my beliefs would fall apart on my deathbed by many. Why should scorn be only reserved for those of faith against those without?

EDIT: btw-I do hate Santa Claus. It is lie that my wife and family make me tell my kids and now my grandkids. Daughter said to me last night, "what would do if the grandkids caught you wrapping presents?" I said, "Well, I'd just have to make a bigger lie."
