Great news!

And at first I've been stumped by the movie rights graphic, but that was until I just now saw the footnote. It's well known that the Marvel characters on Netflix are likely going to have their stories continue in some way on Disney streaming... but I guess that won't happen until at least 2020-2021.

wtf?
sony blinked.
what a big time cave in

Nah, it's all marketing. It's a variation of the South Park gnome's formula:

profit.jpeg

As applied to Marvel & Sony:

1. Setup the previous Spider-man on a cliff-hanger (re: post-credits scene)
2. Marvel finishes their 23-movie Infinity Sage arc...how best to drum up business for the next set of movies?
3. "Ooooh no, we're splitting & you may not get to see Spider-man as you had hoped for in #3!"
4. Wait
5. Announce Spidey is staying the MCU...profit!

Spider-man: Far From Home:

Budget: $160 million
Box office: $1.126 billion

They made a billion dollars off the last Spidey movie. All of the stuff over the past month with Sony taking it back has been pure hype. Now it's been endeared to everyone's hearts & everyone wants to see it. Genius but typical marketing strategy.

Not really. This just kicks things down the road a bit. If the thing I read is correct, its pretty short. Basically it extends to like 2 more movies (one Spider-Man with Feige producing, and one with him in the MCU; they'll almost certainly be returning to this discussion in a few years).

This means Sony is practically guaranteed another $500million pay day out of Spider-Man, which is hard to pass up, while retaining the rights as well. Works out for Marvel too as they keep their current plans in order.

Which, yeah in a way Sony probably should've played hard ball, but there's a possibility that Spider-Man will be even more important to Marvel after those next two movies.

However that is in fact a significant way to perhaps close out a Spidey-centric trilogy (a very Marvel/Disney thing), and then continue Peter Parker's story in the rest of the MCU. There's discussion going around that suggests this incarnation of Spider-Man is being groomed to replace Iron Man as a possible lead role in the MCU cast. This can continue that effort which will make shared rights all that more rewarding for both parties going forward. And I really really hope Sony's Spider-verse live action works include Tom Holland as Spider-man and perhaps occasionally include other MCU characters but otherwise focusing on other characters Sony holds the rights to, like Venom. I want to to see this current Venom with this current Spider-Man, and Sony better not goof that shit up by introducing a different actor for their Spider-verse. Though as long as the Tom Holland Spider-Man can continue indefinitely in the MCU I guess I don't care if Sony creates another Sony-only Spider-Man. If Sony truly wants a Spider-verse they may have to do that just to prevent the MCU plots from interfering and associating with their own Spider-U (SCU? SSCU? ) throughlines.

I'm not sure Sony could really play that hard of ball with Disney. They've been struggling with Sony Picture. It's been losing money for the past five years until the first quarter of this year. The profit it made that quarter was a whopping $3.7 million, which is not much for this industry. While I haven't seen the numbers for what Spider-Man did for them, it's much more than they've done on their own. Last year there were talks of Sony selling off it's movie arm, which would have turned all the rights back over to Marvel. It really seems to me that if they didn't work it out with Marvel there would be a good chance there wouldn't be a studio to make any Spider-Man movies.

Great, now the nerds will stop whining about their favorite grown men in onesies and capes potentially not being accurately portrayed on film!

:D

Yeah, the only thing worse are the Trekkies

Just watched this and it made me think of this thread.

The Nerd Crew is great, I get a very distanced view of the general behavior of modern corporatized geek culture. How else would I have known about the one dipshit having a meltdown because he wasn't invited to Disney's Star Wars thing despite shilling for them constantly? Thankfully I got to bypass the actual pathetic manbaby crap entirely but enjoy the schadenfreude of it.

I had no clue most of that shit even existed (only knew about Loot Crate and the like because they advertised on like ALL the podcasts for awhile there) until RLM started poking fun at it with the Nerd Crew. Early on I even looked at the comments as I had no clue what they were poking fun at (it seemed a little on the nose for them to have randomly come up with some of their bits), and wow I can't believe that shit is real.

I do love how Mike does that while being a full on Trekkie that almost literally cannot have a legit discussion without talking about Star Trek.

the problem that remains with that one is that the "Netflix" content is also wholly owned by Disney, and has already been cancelled for Netflix. IF any of it reappears, it will be on Disney's streaming service.

That tripped me up for awhile, but take a look at the bottom footnote. It said the rights revert to Marvel (Disney) in 2020-2021. I think they just stopped developing the series early as part of some deal.
