Martin Luther King, Jr. Day today

Well there didn't seem to be a thread on this today, so I'm starting one. Today is the federal holiday celebrating the birth and life of Dr. Marting Luther King, Jr. I don't think I need to say much about him because his actions, his words, and his legacy speak for themselves. Today is also the anniversary of his birthday, one of the rare times the holiday falls on his actual birthday. I wonder what Dr King would have thought of the world we live in today. Would he be proud of advancements in race relations? Would he be distraught that we treat men with fear and indignation because they appear Arab? Would he be happy that men no longer have to march the streets to get the rights they deserve. Or would he be saddened that we remove rights from men because we fear terrorism. I can't know what he'd say if he were here today. All I can do is hope that others follow his example of peace and love to all of mankind. I wish I were born earlier because I would have loved to hear him speak in person. But I cannot. So please if you've never heard it, please watch. I think we all need to be reminded.

I Have a Dream!

Martin Luther King, Jr. would have been 78 today.

I also wonder what he would think of those who evoke his name for causes and activities that hardly mirror the manner in which he approached race relations and civil rights.

But he was not just an activist for civil rights. He was also an activist for peace and the poor. He was an activist for mankind in general. Some people pervert his message and overdo it trying to find hatred where it doesn't exist. But far too many ignore his words altogether and hold hatred for people for no reason.

Really, just today? Judging by the local paper, you'd think it was now a three-day celebration. Sorry, but enough already.

No, I am the prosecuting attorney for this case.
Like I said, your evidence is solid, this conviction shouldnt take a jury more than a few mins to render.

We thank you for your serivce detective.

Where's the three day celebration for President's Day or Veteran's Day (a holiday most schools replaced with MLK day)?

It doesn't bother me one way or another, for the most part, but how many times do I need to read about the same damn speech in the paper? geesh, give it a break, we know already. Of course, this is nothing compared to next month. Oops, guess I'm racist for bringing that up too.

If he doesn't have any respect for the holiday or the man and how he tried to help humanity then he should stay out of this thread.. right?

*it is good to see you neocons sticking together though

I probably shouldn't have gone so far as to insinuate what I did.. but the fact remains that this country enslaved and murdered black people and their families and their heritage and denied them basic civil rights long after the signing of the DOI ..

I guess I really appreciate people like MLK FAR MORE than anyone who thinks might makes right or violence and war are acceptable.. I wish there were more days that celebrated people who chose to see us all as one

*I apologize for condemning you in this way. I have become very bitter with all the violence in the world today. 🙁

What's interesting about MLK day is the fact that statistically prodominatley african american companies and business seem to take more off and make a larger deal of MLK day then their majority white companies and businesses. For example in Baltimore, (where I live at). The city is at least 97% AA. Most businesses, resturants and everything is closed within the city. However the county area is mostly operational. The county area is probably 20% AA.

I understand, and I too appreciate and respect the man for what he did. But, there have been many people who have taken courageous steps for humanity's sake, and the fact is they are not nearly as celebrated as MLK.

Violence will always be here, it is inevitable. We shouldn't accept it, but don't let it guide your life either.

ahh the Holiday weekend has arrived for all school, bank and federal employees.

As well as many others, thanks to the diligent work of the snow-ski/resort industry lobbyists.
A three day weekend in the middle of January. Just kidding, this could never happen, I was merely slooshing around. Please continue with your memorial services.

MLK Jr. Day

He neither burnt out
Nor faded away
But was extinguished

For his flare
Seared eyes
And opened hearts
To the reality
That was whitewashed
So long ago
To a sterile
Robotic
Cleanliness

He neither copped out
Nor he compromised
But was silenced

For his words spoke truth
And opened mind
To warm meaning
That was hidden
So long ago
To a sterile
Quiet
Solitude

One man?s cry for reason
Lost in the white noise
Of assassins
Who cannot face
What the golden of us
Rail against forever.

Why is there always violence on any MLK Blvd/St/Ave?

"Because when the CIA sold drugs in the A.A. Neighborhood they sat in a room and tried to figure out how to track its effects on the population. They decided to change the name of the streets for distribution points to MKB Blvd. It was called Operation DR King." 😕

BTW R.I.P.
I do think most in this forum would not even like MLK when it came down to it. They would call him and side show, race card player, fake preacher, and point out his imperfections (like anyone is perfect) I think you guys would really talk him down the same way you talk Sharpton and Jackson down. We should note that neither Sharpton nor Jackson are perfect and Both have a message of peace and use similar methods as MLK fighting for civil rights.
