Well, given how quickly society's attitude has changed towards homosexuals, I think pedohpiles have a chance.Maybe another ten years and Martin Luther King Jr's dream of a society that is not judgemental of superficialities will be realised!

Who woulda thunk we'd have a new member who appears to have joined solely to advocate for the rights of pedophiles?

As he should have, no race or minority should have a day to themsleves (We should also abolish black history month), all that does is seperate them more and empower racism.

give me a break......the dominate culture doesnt even need a day to control everything..let them have their f'ing day

It was most likely because he's pro-business, and a new national holiday would reduce employee productivity and reduce profits. That was the first thing that popped into my mind when you mentioned it, not racism.

just because he is pro business doesnt mean that he isnt racist..and anyway..even then..being probusiness shouldnt mean that you vote against everything that might even slightly inconvenience a business..isnt a person supposed to still have morals and ethics to go along with their views on business?

So non-minorities can have a day to themselves, just not minorities?

I think I know what you want to say, but you came off awefully bigoted in your statement regardless of intent.

Martin Luther King day is for whom then? I guess for you it's for minorities.

Well, for the rest of us, this day is a celebration where our nation began to open its eyes for the good of all people.

That's a great way to see it. I commend you. :)

Yes, I did come off rather bigoted there sorry. I was trying to imply that no race should have a day of celebration to that race. I understand Martin Luther King day is not that, and I shouldn't have stated it in there. I still stand by the fact that no race (be it white, black, asian, arab, mexican ect) should have a day/week/month dedicated to pay homage to there race. When they have this day, all it does is ensure that said race will still feel shackled, and still feel they need to rise up against "the man".

honestly, racism is a two way street. Hell, even bill cosby has seen it and told black people to get off their collective asses and actually do something about their plight. Aye, you're poor. So actually do something in school instead of banking on the fact that you're going to be the next big rapper, or NBA/NFL star. Education is the key to a sucessful life, and in this country, it is there for the taking.

And you liberals don't give me sh1t about being bigoted. I live in Flint, I see this crap every damn day. I went to schools were I was the only white kid in my class. Hell, I work in schools as an IT person and see the same crap every day. Urban kids don't give a fvck about their education. Until we change that, no of this afirmitive action BS and coddling them because their ancestors got fvcked over is going to work. All it does is breed an attitude of expected handouts.

The reason they do is because not too long ago Black's were openly 2nd Class citizens in certain parts of the US. The Feds had to send in Troops to take Black school children to school! MLK and the Civil Rights Movement were the target of violence and extreme opposition for righting a wrong that should never have existed.

The Shame of the greater population made it a necessity to establish these Days/Months. It is a well deserved Shame and a well deserved recognition of those who suffered such discrimination.

MLK is probably the greatest American of the last half of the 20th Century. His Day is well deserved and should be honoured by all IMO.

You started out fine, then went on a Lunatic "libral" rant. Congrats.

Your first paragraph contains good points. Cosby and other leaders in the Black community have begun trying to motivate the community. Just understand that it takes time for people to realize that they can actually do something after being held down for so long. Often they were taught that they could get ahead in their youth, only to find out later that they couldn't because of discrimination that existed throughout society. This is why Affirmative Action was instituted and as a result of that many Blacks have made great strides in all aspects of American Society.

lol. It seems like every time I post anything thats "conservitive" I get flak about being a racist. Perhaps its troll-bait, perhaps its an unconcious reaction to massive stomach cramps right now (don't eat white castle in Flint MI!).

Not that I'm a Dick Cheney fan, but to clear the record... there were two votes on this subject, one in 1979 where the MLK Day bill was opposed by a majority in Congress, and a second time in 1983 when it passed. Congress was in Democratic control both times, and Dick Cheney voted in the majority both times.

BTW, I agree with the poster who thinks MLK Day should be renamed Civil Rights Day.

MLK day is a celebration of the civil rights movement. It is important to any race, majority/minority or group. Without civil liberties, a singular theocracy, or prejudice group could run this country.

I found this quotation particularly relevant. It's like he's speaking to anandtech:

?We must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing oriented society to a person oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives, and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.?
