krav maga is good for street fights. After all that?s what the Israelis developed it for. However, it all depends on how good the instructors are. You want lots of open sparing.

This link has a list of all the different types of martial arts.

Dont do Taekwondo, its boring. I liked Judo alot, but take something like Lotus or Kung Fu if you want to center on pure fighting.

Boxing might be a good choice too if you wanna get real tough.

I already box with friends for sport/exercise, kind of why I like to punch, but there aren't any boxing gyms around my area. Mostly in Los Angeles, and with traffic is about a 40 minute drive. Also location is pretty ghetto.

It must be cool not to read the OP's post and then ramble on about whatever you feel like.

He said he isnt interested in grappling.

I know some Jeet Kun Do/Wing Chun Kung Fu there is a bit of grappling involved. Most of the grappling is arm bars and C locks (that I know so far.) It is a close combat technique and even if you decide on another art i suggest looking into the blocks used in Wing Chun because they are application based blocks instead of Karate blocks that are going to get you hurt in a real situation.

Learning a soft style such as WC will take longer for you to get to a level where you are confident but have more of a payoff IMO. If you are looking to quickly learn to fight then if you can find someone to teach Korean TKD.

Pride has the premiere fighters in the world. 9/10 people who are very familiar with the field would agree that Pride currently has more talent than UFC

My instructor destroyed a boxer twice in a row at fight night here at a local club. At the time he was not even a black belt and didnt know half of what he knows now. I have it on video somewhere. Anyways the guy is now training to be an olympic boxer. I suggest not going boxing if you are looking for street application.

I'd go with Tai Chi Chuan, wu shu style.

My Tai Chi master can use his single palm with a twist of his wrist and throw me back 6 feet while I'm trying to squeeze him to death.

Although it took him 20 years to be able to do something like that.

I wouldn't use boxing in a real street fight, just not practical. I would like to find a style that has arms bars and other locks? and such so that I can disable the attacker, but also would be nice to be the one attacking instead of always being on the defensive.

There's no one "wrong" or one "right" style. Some styles are better to start with than others, but that's just personal preference.

What's up with the stance of that guy in the video? Looks unstable, and like it's made to look "cool" instead of be functional. If you watch Bruce Lee, he looked like a boxer or someone who doesn't know martial arts... natural instead of from a Hong Kong kung fu movie.

Wu Shu is different from tai chi. and the op said he was not interested in soft styles. also tai chi takes atleast 4 years of serious practice before you can even try to fight with it assuming you take the hardcore chen style. If you take other styles it may take even longer.

and to the OP. Don't take boxing, the reason is because in boxing you wear the big gloves and use them to block and such so it is different from real fighting.

Krav Maga is your best bet because it's the most practical; what are you going to do with kata's and poomse's? Impress your would-be attacker? :D

I'm hoping that people can give me any suggestions as to which style would be best suited for self-defense possibly involving more than 1 person (I like kicking and punching though, so Aikido type styles doesn't really interest me). I've done some reading and so far it seems Krav Maga fits the bill pretty well.
Also, what should I look for from an instructor and what else should I know before signing with an instructor? Thanks for any help.

edit: Reason I haven't decided on Krav Maga is because the closest one is about 40min away.

Listen, Im going to tell you this for free. Save your money, martial arts dont mean sh!t when it comes down to a fight. What it comes down to is power, strength, and stamina. I took Tae Kwon Do for eight years when I was a bit younger. I am 22 now and I can tell you that martial arts wont do you any good when your 5'11 170lb frame is fighting someone bigger and stronger. Sorry bro. Buy some pepper spray.

Learn karate and always carry a set of "sai" around with you.
Even against larger opponents, I can hold my ground.

If you do go with karate, stick with one of the main branches.

Horny Monkey Technique > *

Also allows you to fly/glide over trees and skip over water like a rock. Solarity also comes in time when you've mastered your horniness.

Look for a teacher that makes his students spar regularly, not just once a week.. Sit in on the sparring session and look at how the students move, a teacher is only as good as his best student. Make sure his advanced students are actually fighting.. not tapping for points, but trying to end the fight using the style.
It would be a good sign if they use full-face masks while sparring, and gloves that allow finger mobility.
Full masks are better because if you go rough you aren't gonna get a broken nose sparring.

Don't pay a lot of money.. most of the good ones are not expensive, just hard to find.
Don't sign up for a plan... you'll be stuck paying if you think it sucks after 3 weeks.

I'd recommend a hard style kung fu, any serious groundfighting style, or preferably a combination thereof.
Goto a place that focuses on hand skills and not a lot of kicking. In a fight you'll be tied up close or on the ground most of the time.
