Martial Arts Question

I'm thinking of taking up martial arts, mainly for self-defense, but also I've always wanted to since I was a kid. I'm now 24 yo, weigh 170lbs and am 5'11" (Not sure if the info matters).
I'm hoping that people can give me any suggestions as to which style would be best suited for self-defense possibly involving more than 1 person (I like kicking and punching though, so Aikido type styles doesn't really interest me). I've done some reading and so far it seems Krav Maga fits the bill pretty well.
Also, what should I look for from an instructor and what else should I know before signing with an instructor? Thanks for any help.

edit: Reason I haven't decided on Krav Maga is because the closest one is about 40min away.

I'd probably go with the plain old Karate first. It's kinda hard for an adult to take up martial arts, but not impossible :)

slap boxing, or perhaps tactical flailing depending on your natural style. Or you can adopt my own hybrid disciplne that I've developed over TWO SEASONS fighting in the octogon called.... Tactical Flapping!

Jeet kun do (bruce lee's style)

Muy Thai (hardcore damage)

Capoeira (you can be a break dancer too!)

Tae Kwon Do (fun but you'll get you ass handed to you in real fight)

Mixed Martial Arts (the ufc style depends on the guy training you but it's good to have a good mix of hand-to-hand skills and grappling skills for when a fight goes to the ground)

Hap Ki Do , which incorporates Tae Kwon Do (where you can do your kicking and punching).

Definitely mixed martial arts. Combination of Muay Thai Kickboxing and Brazillian Jujiutsi. Pride FC is the premiere MMA professional organization in the world. Look up some Wanderlei silva videos.

Whatever style you take, make sure there is actual sparring involved. Too many McDojos making money off of Krav Magna, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and muay thai fame. You just stand around there and do repeative moves for an 1hr. Two months later they say you're ready to move up to the next level, but it will cost you to take test and move up.

Yea, I definitely would want to spar with someone and test what I've learned. I guess that's something that'll I have to ask before I sign up.

Tae Kwon Do is easily the most popular and accessible (at least it is around here). But how practical are roundhouse kicks in a real situation where you need to defend yourself? You should learn something with some holds/punches or something like that.

Or just buy a gun.

Drunken Monkey. It's easy to learn. Just down a bottle of your favorite alcoholic beverage.

Akido is pretty awsome. very good for self defence since most of the moves are based on the person swinging at you, then you using their momentum to throw them. atleast thats what you learn for a good portion of time, if you train long enough they teach you sword manuvers, but thats after some years. its mostly hand to hand, not weapon based.

Yeah, a lot of tae kwon do places around my area, but since its mostly kicking, as opposed to grappling, disarming and/or breaking limbs, it doesn't seem all that effective.
Always been interested in firearms also, so I'll be getting a pistol and maybe a shotgun and rifle, in the future.
