I hear that for women, there is kind of an internal clock to get married, and that as they age, there is more and more pressure for them to get hitched. I remember one time I talked to a girl who was 26 and she was completely bummed that she wasn't married yet. So is this true in general, or not?

Yeah, but it works both ways. Mine is ticking down, telling me to get out now. :p

Actually though, I don't think its so much of a marriage clock as the biological clock. Women start thinking if they don't have a family by a certain age, they never will. And most women do want to be married first, and do it the right way.

It seems to me that the urge to get married is caused more by societal influence than anything else (don't want to be an old spinster do ya), while there is a very real biological 'clock' that both men and women have that makes them want to have offspring. Since women have a limited child-bearing 'window of opportunity', that clock starts ticking a little more urgently than the male clock does......

GF: heh, I hear you, my "divorce clock" is rattling like a time bomb. Of course I am only 29 and have been married 3 times already, so my clocks are all screwed up.

rotf! I've had to rewind mine a couple of times...

For me it has to do with seeing sex as something that I wouldn't just do with anyone. And no, it's not so much a religious conviction as it is a personal one. Bodily fluids are very personal things! :p

So, it's marriage or celibacy...

The urge to reproduce is partly induced by the direct environment, but its main cause lies in the way living beings are programmed:

Without offspring a population will die, therefore this 'urge' is 'build-in' in our genes. The environment can change whether someone will or will not produce offspring, but for the most people it only changes the age on which they'll produce offspring. Although this too can be linked too genetical causes, for in 'poor' countries and areas in which 'civilization' is still unknown, people tend to get children much earlier than in 'civilized' countries/areas and also much more children than what is common here. It's almost like we've some internal program which becomes active when it is no longer necessary for the population to grow. That's why the growth of the world-population is caused by Third-World countries and not by Western countries.

A 'marriage-clock' would be impossible, for 'marriage' is something we Humans have invented and isn't known in every culture.

If you think a woman's hormonal "marriage clock" is bad, just wait 'till the "want to have a baby clock" goes off! ;)
