Marketing research 101: know your audience, or, why is AOL of all people advertising on ATOT?

Maybe it's just me, but does it not seem a bit odd that America Online has purchased a banner ad on top of the ATOT page? This isn't exactly AOL friendly territory after all. Heck, folks with AOL as their ISP aren't even allowed to join the forum. Seems like the target audience here would be larger for feminine hygiene products than it would be for AOL, or am i missing something?

BTW, mods, i'm not complaining and i have no problem with Anandtech taking AOL's advertising money, i just thought their choice in advertising venues was quite, ummm... interesting.

As a fellow subscriber, I like :D

As for the original question by glenn1, how did Pontiac get the A$$tec into production? Someone isn't paying attention over at their corporate offices.

AOL is not paying for their ad to be put on AT.

They are paying for their ad to be placed by an ad vendor, who AnandTech uses.

Thus AOL probably has little to no clue where their banner goes on a daily basis, just that it's out there.

Dude, we just had someone start a topic about finding a "Great new free OS named Linux!"

Maybe they DO know their audience! :)

I'm sure that Viper GTS is right about the ad-service. But if AOL had decided advertise directly on Atech I'd say that know something I don't about the Atech members. I'm sure the AOL/Time Warner/Disney empire is quite able to do their market research...and in anycase it's chump change to them even if they screw up.

Why would AOL want to advertise to people who already had their service?

Neither do I! :D But seriously, glenn1, that's an interesting observation. I think the banner ad agencies need to customize the code for their web clients.
