I really wish you didn't say that one of the all time greatest hockey players sucked.
Although 4-on-4 would be rather interesting. Someone should start an XHL.

Yeah!!! And then we could put cheerleaders in it too!!! That would be GREAT! A goal would be 3 points instead of one, and there'd be no goalie! Cameras everywhere and J.R. could do the play by play! "THE FACE OFF IS WON BY THE THUGS!!! OMG...THEY CAN'T DO THAT IN THE NHL!!!" I can see it now!!!

The recent switch from the offensive game of the 80's and early 90's to the trap system used today has been a grip of Mario's for quite some time. Heck, he cited that a one of the reason's he decided to retire from the game originally.
Personally I don't think that the 4 on 4 is such a good idea, but something must be done. With the recent explosion in the NHL bringing nearly an expansion team a year into the mix has left the talent pool pretty sparse. In the late 80's, with the addition of the Soviet players being infused into the NHL fold, expansion seemd necessary. Problem is it's gone way too far and because the talent just isn't there teams have to compensate to be competitive. That means mucking up the neutral zone as often as possible. This frustrates the star or "finesse" players, and causes the games to become quite boring--not a good thing if you are trying to attract fans to the game.
IMNSHO I would lengthen and widen the ice to the euorpean/olympian size. At least give the guys some room to skate.

Nobody here remembers the "broad street bullies" and the big fearsome teams of the 70's huh? What happened to the great players who could score, assist and get in a fight? "Blood on the Ice" is still a part of the game here in N. America, gretz and mario can go to europe where they play an "open and exciting style" of hockey, I like my "freindly game of hockey" the way it is.

It's too cramped and there too much fighting in North America. I still find it odd that in hockey, someone can almost punch a guy out cold and just get two minutes, while in basketball, a guy just looks at someone the wrong way and he's kicked out. I like the big ice and sportsman like play of the Europeans. I feel this way, despite the fact I grew up in Saskatchewan, where a lot of big burly hard-hitting hockey players are from. (I'm not a big burly hard-hitting guy, so that might have something to do with it though. 
)

I saw the Broad Street Bullies. They were a disgrace. They started a stupid fashion best exemplified in the movie Slap Shot. I still remember Bobby Clarke being so proud of having broken Valeri Kharlamov's ankle with his stick. The whole violence fad culminated in 76 with Rick Jozzio breaking Marc Tardif's skull and sending him in a coma for 8 months.
Despite the mystique of Fred Shero's so-called method, the BSB were successfull only because of one man: Bernard Parent. When his stellar goaltending dropped down a notch, they were shown for the slightly above average team that they were. Without Parent, the aura of Fred 'The Fog' Shero would have rightfully been seen to be just a lot of hot air, as was proven later.

You're outta your mind if you think the game of today resembles that which was known in the 70's. Not even close. Mickey Redmond, one of the best players of that era (and tough guy) and one of the most vocal enthusiasts of "old time hockey", nightly laments about the crap that is served to hockey fans today. It's a disgrace to the game and they've taken away what made the game exciting. Hockey is more than just bruising and haymakers--which is also on it's way out. It's more than just grabbing and holding. The product they are selling is boring, viewership is down, and the "clutch and grab" style appears to be causing more and more injury--everything from groin pulls to "stick work" up side da head.
What I'm watching now certainly isn't what I grew up with.
Mario is right about one thing... there is too much clutching and grabbing in the league today. Hockey is much more defensive, and in many cases boring. I don't think 4 on 4 is the answer but something needs to be done.

Second, call the penalties. All the hooking, tripping, intereference, especially in the neutral zone needs to be called.
Oh, and Lemieux's play has been simply amazing. The guy comes back after 3 and half years of playing golf and dominates the league. Makes you wonder what he could have done if not for all those back problems.

Marios return was one of the biggest moments in NHL history, and you say that he is suck? 4 on 4 is not a bad idea, I play 4 on 4 hockey all the time... it forces you to be more nimble and make better plays than just throw your weight around. It would surly make a huge impact in hockey, however i believe it would make it change for the better.. games would be even faster paced, and the plays would be much more creative and entertaining.

Speaking as one of the insane mental-patients that strap on kevlar/titanium body armor in order to willingly throw various parts of my anatomy in front of 80 mile an hour hurtling pieces of vulcanized rubber, I'd like to formally tell Mario to quit his whining and play the game!
Hockey is 5 players and a goaltender vs. 5 players and a goaltender on the ice. It is a game where average scores are 3-2, and where defense, offense and goaltending combine with physical play to create one of the fastest and most interesting sports to both watch and play.
I play goalie for both a corporate team in tournaments, as well as filling in for rec, university, and various league games. I also play pickup a lot, as this year I am trying to return to the game after a 6 year absence. Let me tell you, in the pickup games you see it all - no defense, 4 on 4 because guys don't show up...
These 10-8 score games with no real defense, no bodychecks... are the worst both for watching and playing! After the gaem, you know who the only ones happy with the way the game was played are? The arrogant "star" forwards who cruised to a 4 goal night and boosted thier own stats.
Mario can go whine his way to the European League if he can't handle the NHL. The stupid thing is, he can and does play incredibly well in the NHL - its off the ice he seems to loose brain functionality. :|

I like the idea of 4 on 4 either that or goto European sized rinks. The players of today are much bigger than those of the 80's and earlier. This would allow a much faster paced game and allow those players who have real skating and stick handling abilty to show their stuff. I grew up watching the broad street bullies and the bruins and find the open game much more enjoyable to watch.
The average scores are 3-2 today, but the in the 80s the Oilers averaged 5 goals a game for a few seasons. I don't have the exact stats but its plainly obvious that scoring is down - way down in the last several years. We don't necessarily have to move to 4 on 4, but we should always be open to looking at improving the game.

Who here played hockey as opposed to watched it? UH!?! Look at how awful Mario point output is since he came back, what it is down to now? 2.5 points a game? Give me a break, he and Wayne have both been whining about the pysical play for years and years. Give me a team of Cam Neely's, Brenden Shanahan's and other big mean players with good skating and scoring touches and I'll show you some real hockey.
