Yeah, I also know some people who smoke pot but are very adept at what they do that doesn't involve drugs...

Yep..

It really just depends on the person, and how they use the drug. It changes things a lot when you view an external substance as a medicine, or mind expander.

If you really think that smoking cannabis makes you stupid, you need to get some better cannabis smoking friends. :)

I believe that if you ate it, there would be absolutely no long term negative side effects whatsoever. Infact, it would probably be good for you to mix a bit up with your salad. :p

I know a lot of raging alcoholics who are dumber than a stone. They get DUIs, Domestic Violence, etc, etc. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

why is anyone even bothering trying to reason with sachmho? he's quite obviously made up his mind about marijuana and its users, and he dismissed the studies tweakmm provided because they didn't support his beliefs.

sachmho, no one is forcing you to smoke marijuana. just as your anecdotal evidence suggests marijuana users are stupid, many others' suggest the opposite. if you can reference studies- not the people you've come across who smoke pot and aren't so bright, but actual, credible studies- that prove marijuana use does in fact kill brain cells and make you more stupid, many on this board would be glad to hear them, myself included. until then, please stop baiting others into giving you their opinions when you obviously don't care what they have to say.

Honestly, i'm not trying to prove anything... I'm presenting what i've come across and hoping to get real feedback... i'm not at all opposed to the usage of marijuana, but I personally don't partake in it... I find it to be a socially relevant topic and wanted to see what people have to say regarding how it can be so innocent yet all i come across are dumb stoners...

Its much easier to pretend you are stupid than always have the right answer. Some people just can't take the fact that sometimes they are wrong, so they act stupid. You'd be surpised how many people smoke pot, that you would never imagine. Some of the smartest people have tried drugs, not just marijuana, but things like acid and shrooms. If you know how to use the tool, and not abuse it, it will get you further in life. If you can't use the hammer don't build a house.

Most pot smokers you meet seem stupid because most people you meet ARE stupid. It's just that simple. With that being said, some of the most quick-witted people I have ever met were heavy pot users.

I haven't met too many raging alcoholics who beat their wives and children on a regular basis that were also Mensa members.

Coincidence????

Although researchers found no irreversible cognitive defects from a lifetime of marijuana consumption, pot users are not a happy lot. In a separate study, most heavy users admitted that the drug has a negative impact on all aspects of their lives from job performance and physical health to mental well being and satisfactory socializing.
Heavy smokers also have substantially smaller incomes and lower levels of education than nonusers or light users, despite the fact that the education and income levels of their families are the same. However, there's no way to determine if marijuana is the cause or if these people naturally have less ambition.
"It's a chicken and egg situation," Pope admits. "Probably the direction of causality goes both ways. In all likelihood, people who become frequent users are somewhat different at the outset; they may have lower cognitive abilities or less motivation. Once they start using the drug regularly, these differences become wider."
Asked if his conclusions would lead him to make any recommendations for or against legalizing marijuana, Pope answered "no, because so many other political and social factors are involved." He noted that alcohol, which is sold legally, causes cognitive deficits in long-term heavy users that do not disappear after 28 days and may be cumulative. However, he adds, "such toxicity is only one factor in the decision."
A number of investigations have linked marijuana to an increased risk of lung cancer. A recent Harvard study concluded that a middle-age person's chance of having a heart attack increases nearly five times during the first hour after smoking pot. That's especially meaningful for baby boomers who developed the habit in their teens and 20s and continue to use the drug in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. Other researchers have associated pot with impaired disease resistance and adverse effects on fetuses when mothers smoke the drug during pregnancy.

Anybody ever think that those people that are so emersed into a level of substance abuse that it is painfully obvious to all those around them were maybe stupid before they got high?

All of my braided stoner type friends used lots of other drugs besides marijuana. It's not the marijuana that makes you stupid.
