Bad news for tokers - https://www.sciencenews.org/article/marijuana-use-weakens-heart-muscle

NEW ORLEANS — Marijuana use is associated with an almost doubled risk of developing stress cardiomyopathy, a sudden life-threatening weakening of the heart muscle, according to a new study. Cannabis fans may find the results surprising, since two-thirds believe the drug has no lasting health effects. But as more states approve recreational use, scientists say there’s a renewed urgency to learn about the drug’s effects.

An estimated 22 million Americans — including 38 percent of college students — say they regularly use marijuana. Previous research has raised cardiovascular concerns: The drug has been linked to an increased risk of heart attack immediately after use, and a 2016 study in rodents found that one minute of exposure to marijuana smoke impairs the heart’s inner lining for 90 minutes, longer than tobacco’s effect.

The new study, presented November 13 during the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions, examined the occurrence of stress cardiomyopathy, which temporarily damages the tip of the heart. Researchers from St. Luke’s University Health Network in Bethlehem, Pa., searched a nationwide hospital database and found more than 33,000 admissions for stress cardiomyopathy from 2003 to 2011. Of those, 210 were identified as marijuana users, and had about twice the odds of developing the condition, said Amitoj Singh, who led the study. Young men were at highest risk and more likely to go into cardiac arrest despite having fewer cardiovascular risk factors. Notably, the number of marijuana-linked cardiomyopathies increased every year, from 17 in 2007 to 76 in 2011. “With recent legalization, I think that’s going to go up,” Singh said.

I can't help but think there's political timing to this bit of news. Probably worth checking who sponsored the research.

Well, I have to say that this is the first negative effect of marijuana I've heard in my lifetime. Surely, the fact that it can purportedly cure cancer will negate this, right?

And OTC NSAIDs cause TERRIFYING microbleeds in your stomach and damage the liver.

The horror!

I wonder how many of those 204/33,000 admissions for cardiomyopathy attributed to weed also engaged in brilliant activities like butt chugging to enhance their weed experience?

Would be keen if it were moved off schedule I so actual medical studies could be done. This is interesting, but we're missing a lot of data.

Part of me feels like I need to Google this. The other part of me is worried I might like what I find.

The stress is probably caused by worrying about police busting down your door and confiscating everything you own under forfeiture laws.

Sauce:
http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/hear...ons/stress_cardiomyopathy/who_is_at_risk.html

"Women are eight to nine times more likely to experience stress cardiomyopathy than men. The average age of those affected is around 60 years old. While it can also occur in young women and even in men, the vast majority of the patients we have seen with this are post-menopausal women."

Wow, seems like maybe post-menopausal women who are already at pretty significant risk should be cautious/careful around mj.

And tylenol lead to 56,000 ED visits, 2,600 hospital admits and 458 deaths last year.

Fun fact about Tylenol. With the state of pharma regulations today, and what level of risks are acceptable; if Acetaminophen was being trialed to market today, it most likely would not be approved. It's very hard on your kidneys among other risk factors.

This sort of scapegoating of marijuana is always amusing. Alcohol and tobacco both pose significantly more health risks than most illicit drugs. You'd have to be injecting heroin or a methhead to eclipse the risk factors those two drugs pose.

Next week it will be something else. It's pretty hard to believe anything these days. Though, I am in that 1/3rd that believe there are lasting effects of Marijuana use. I also believe it is addictive.

Next week some other study will come out and say it 'strengthens the heart'. I don't trust studies on either side in most cases. these days they all have an agenda they are pushing. (and never puffed in my life..)

Heroin is actually fairly clean and not bad for you. The biggest factors are bad cutting agents and the incredibly variable amount of heroin you get on the street making it very easy to overdose. If you could get something like morphine or a real steady purity, clean heroin, you can easily be a long term addict.

And, I can't wait for more of these garbage studies to come out both for and against marijuana. Personally, I rue the day it becomes legal in Chicago. Not because I think it is terrible for you (though, anyone who believes inhaling smoke from any kind of burnt thing doesn't have some negative effects is a moron) and I don't think it cures every disease all these hippies claim. It just has a very distinct, pungent odor I'd rather not fucking smell everywhere.

Hey, hey, hey. Don't bring that garbage in here. It's legal so it must be fine. The government is always watching out for me...

Exactly. Any combustion product is going to have deleterious effects if for no other reason than the particulates you're inhaling. You may as well be sucking diesel exhaust. OK maybe not that bad but people think oh, well, it's a plant and it's natural so it's ok. Sure. Go stand by a camp fire and inhale that smoke for a while and see how you feel.

In terms of using marijuana medicinally via an oral route like a lozenge or brownie or something like that. I think that's probably safe just like a lot of other herbal remedies are safe and even healthy. But sucking smoke is never going to be a good idea.
