Marijuana lowers IQ permanently study says

Uh, what was I going to post? Just a sec. Hey! A new study that came out says that our favorite herb is, like, it does permanent damage to brains and stuff.
My comment on it? This is not cool.

Laurence Steinberg, a psychologist at Temple University in Philadelphia, said the study is the first to distinguish between cognitive problems that might result from using cannabis in adolescence, from those that existed prior to the cannabis use.

"The findings are pretty clear that it is not simply chronic use that causes deficits, but chronic use with adolescent onset," he said.

Researchers found persistent users of the drug, who started smoking it at school, had lower IQ scores as adults.

They were also significantly more likely to have attention and memory problems in later life, than their peers who abstained.

Furthermore, those who started as teenagers and used it heavily, but quit as adults, did not regain their full mental powers, found academics at King’s College London and Duke University in the US.

Since it seems there's an accelerated move recently to make marijuana more available in my State I'd like to see more medical studies done on short term and long term effects.

But the booze, cigarettes, meth and X they'd use instead are all A-OK!

The pragmatists like me who want to legalize marijuana still want it to be regulated and taxed like alcohol and tobacco, not to have it added to school lunches.

And no, I don't use any drugs other than caffeine.

There's a cnn.com article on this here: http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/27/health/health-teen-pot/index.html?hpt=hp_c2

This article has another aspect to the story that is not mentioned in the links presented in the OP:

But Meier and her colleagues weren't able to entirely rule out alternative explanations for the IQ declines seen in the study. For instance, although they controlled for alcohol and drug use, they focused on full-blown dependence (as opposed to more casual use) and therefore may have underestimated the effects of teen drinking.

"It's hard to be dependent as a teenager, so you worry about (whether) you can be sure it's the cannabis," Brosco says. "Alcohol is well known to be a neurotoxin."

Only 5% of the study participants began smoking marijuana regularly before age 18, and it's not clear from the findings whether less-frequent users might experience similar declines in IQ and mental function. More research will be needed to determine the minimum dosage of marijuana associated with these problems, the authors say.

So no definitive conclusions can yet be drawn.

The drop in IQ doesn't surprise me in the least. What is somewhat surprising is that the IQ drop only seems to occur in those who start smoking pot as adolescents but not those that start later. It must somehow hinder brain development in those that are still growing up but not affect brains that have already fully developed.

pizza party time!

Keep on toking, it really shows.

I don't smoke, but I have, and this is moronic. Keep on suffocating monkeys and telling us this plant is dangerous while the rest of the civilized world laughs at how ridiculous your "science" is.

Every teen I knew in high school that smoked everyday also drank alchohol like a fish. I, on the other hand, did not as I was a serioous athlete; which is the same reason I smoked twice in high school. I'm sure regular use of a substance that acts as a neurotoxin had more to do with the IQ loss seen in this study than mj did.

Perhaps. I have no horse in the game and don't really care about the results, but teasing out confounding variables in this is something any competent statistician should be able to do. I don't know whether it was done here or not and whether the findings are meaningful or not, but is it really so preposterous to think regular consumption of a chemical can have long standing impacts? Hell no.

More stupid propagandist bullshit. *yawn*

This indeed. There is always a study that shows some unproven bullshit. I know some brilliant MD's who somehow made it though all the schooling and time you have to put it. Someone their stupid brains carried them though. Imagine that, FUD study is full of shit...

That is the purpose of a study, to look at unproven things and find out information about them. You would know this if not for all the dope smoking you did, which lowered your IQ. 😉

Trust me, there isn't enough dope in the world to have caused an IQ as low as his 😀

So, where's the actual study, rather than interpretations of it?

Where's the peer review?

How did researchers determine THC/ byproduct levels in the blood of the 38 year old subjects at time of re-test, for example? Questionnaire? Ouija board?

I do hope everybody here realizes that "studies" linking cannabis use to nearly every malady known to man are regularly debunked...

Not a naturally occuring one that humans have been ingesting for thousands of years, no. If it really had this effect it would have set the development of our entire species back for thousands of years. This is preposterous.

It's a shame the naturally stupid people posting in this thread have no plant to blame for their shortcomings. It must be terribly frightening to them to know that despite all their best efforts, they are worse off from the get go then someone who apparently to them needed to smoke a plant to level the playing field! What a prize, you beat two trees! The dumb gene passed down by one or both of their parents is strong with these folks... Degenerates 🙂

Carl Sagan smoked dope.

As an adult or as a teenager?

The articles focus on teenagers that smoke weed, and how their IQ is affected later in life.

The iq drop has not been noted in adults that smoke weed.

Does this explain why some cultures never developed past the stone age?

That is leadership, pure and simple. Look at the middle east. The leaders over there have golden toilets while their subjects don't even get a middle school education. And I highly doubt very many of them smoke herb because of their psychotic jihadist religious leaders.
