Where I live, we already have an alchohol tax.

But otherwise, it's just crazy to put pot smokers in prisons and tie up the court system and police depts.

IMO, it's long past due to decriminalize it (it remains "illegal" but there is no penalty like in Holland. Doing that let's you make the *official* statement that it's use is *bad*) or legalize and tax it.

I wish somebody would ask the Dem candidates that in a debate. I see no need to ask the Repubs. I know what their answer will be.

Actually the last meaningful vote in the house of reps was pretty recent - late July I think. The Hinchey Amendment (ceasing funding of the DEA raids on med marijuana states) could have easily passed without even full democrat support, but alas the do-nothing dems are spineless as usual.

(It even got 18 republican votes.)

Why would democrats want to legalize pot?

As for mary jane, it is creeping its way towards legality, and hopefully the next generation will be able to take the steps this one couldn't.

Not that it's relevant, but I don't use. Only because it's smoked though. When they have the MJ pill, I'd probably rather take that then get wasted on beer. Fewer calories too.

Vaporizer FTW!

anyhoo: legalize it, and tax the shit out of it.

I say, if you gonna legalize one drug and not the other is just plain stupid. Either do or don't.... You can't have it both ways... The only bad thing about a "SIN" tax is that instead of the money going (profits from the drugs) that would go to support the end of the drugs use it goes to a church and lines of the pockets of the evil doers!

:p

alcohol is taxed, and in some states highly regulated....

Alcohol is taxed in every state I think... I guess I should have stated...

If we did legalize it we should tax ALL DRUGS at the same rate... Be it caffeine nicotine etc...etc...

The Hinchey Amendment wasn't about legalizing pot. But don't let that stop you from replying...sounds like your goal is to be as ignorant as the dems (and republicans) who voted against the amendment.

I think it's a great idea, the more stupid you get, the more smart the rest of the world will be.

It's what happens to long term smokers, they get stupid, really really stupid.

I'm pretty sure most sane democrats won't be for pot.

So you're saying they are for putting pot smokers in prison?

Hehe, gives me a better idea. That's what I'd ask the Dem in the debate "Are you for putting pot smokers in prison and, if so why"?

That'd make a nice *trick* question. :D

They'd say something like "We need to look at decrimianlizing marijuana". Next question please.

Yes, but at an extremely high sin tax and make cigarettes nearly the same tax rate as well.

Dude...why tax what you can grow in your backyard?

An extremely high tax on marijuana would be the wrong way to go. Unlike cigarettes, marijuana isn't highly addictive so the tax revenue you would get from high taxation wouldn't be optimal. Also, marijuana is very easy to grow so high taxation would switch consumption toward unofficial channels.

sperm counts in males have dropped significantly in the last few decades. :)

Of of course we should. Compared to other drugs, there is no question it shouldn't be. But at the same time, the base argument is that I can't tell you what to put into your body and you can't tell me what to put in mine. So therefore, all drugs should be legal. It is extremely idealogical, but the only way to fully overcome "the drug problem" that we have today is to educate people on them, do research into them, teach people why they affect you differently and they will understand scientifically why Cocaine in it's refined form is so much worse than it's natural one. They will learn about the THC receptors in our brains that process it for us, which, by the way, my mother still thinks potheads made up.

Education is key. But I guess that goes for just about anything. The corporate greed that America breeds is despicable. We have put making and spending money the cornerstones of people's goals, and I see more people working crap 9 to 5 jobs and hate them, yet do it for the frilling paycheck. To me, even a million bucks isn't worth being miserable.

Sadly, I really don't think that it is creeping towards legality. We do have great movements such as the Law Enforcement of Prohibition and NORML, but we really don't have an opinion anymore. I don't see myself being represented like I was taught in school. I love my country, I'll die for it, but I fear my government more than anything.
