Save number 600 tonite. That makes 559 regular season and 41 in the post season.
That puts in 5 behind Trevor Hoffmans 605 (601 plus 5 post season)

Basically its a tie. Though I think saves in the post season count for more.

So, is Mariano Rivera the best relief pitcher ever??

Does baseball actually include postseason stats in career stats? I guess they would, just not in the season stats (obviously).

The idea of naming the best reliever ever is kind of sketchy. Because if you're good enough (and have the pitch variety) to be the best reliever ever, you'll almost always be a starter. Not much arguing that he's the best closer ever, though, but that's relatively new.

The board time-warping again? Rivera didn't get a save tonight, he picked up #600 on Thursday.

Rivera is the best modern closer. Best reliever ever though? Not too sure, he's pitching a much different role than relievers of 20 years ago and beyond. Now a closer can come into a 5-2 game, give up 5 hits and two run in an inning of work and pick up a save. Guys like Goose Gossage came into 3-3 games with nobody out and the bases loaded in the 6th. They were expected to get out of the jam and then finish the game. They didn't rack up nice easy saves by the bucketload.

This is true, but Rivera has been almost unhittable for about 14 years now, and his record in the postseason is remarkable.

Also, while Rivera does get the nice easy 9th inning saves, he is also frequently brought into the 8th inning with a runner or two on base. In the postseason a two inning save for him is the norm, and he's done three inning saves a number of times.

Whoa, 2 whole innings? Wow, it's amazing that he doesn't need a month off to recuperate. Rivera's top workload in the last 13 years has been 80 innings. 80. Most years it's upper 60s to low 70s Gossage did more than 133 innings 4 straight years, hit a peak of 224 and was still doing 90-100 innings a year at the stage of his career that Rivera is in now. Two inning saves?? ROFL!! That's the problem with somebody crowning Rivera as the best in history when their version of history extends 2 weeks back in time. Bruce Sutter did 10 straight years of more than Rivera has hit as his peak. A 2-inning save isn't something to be proud of, that's the difference between "modern" closers like Rivera and true firemen like Gossage and Sutter. 2 innings was a light workload for relievers of that era and they did it 3 and 4 times a week. When Rivera works 2 innings he needs the next day off. His arm would have exploded 10 years ago if he tried to do what relievers back in the real fireman era did.

He's good at what he does, which is make the Yankees only have to defend an 8-inning game. I hate the Yankees more than anyone but really he has always been one of their greatest assets, and has been so consistently over the postseason. You want to compare him with something he isn't.

Being a great reliever is nothing to write home about. The reason you are a reliever is because you are not reliable enough to be a starter. Look at Paplebon on the Sox. Sure, he gets his saves, but if went more than 3 innings, he would become unpredictable and get lit up.
