The usual way is tequila + margarita mix.

I prefer tequila, triple sec, and lime juice.

that's not the usual way. that's the easy way.

your preference is the usual way.

I like them either way. the mix is just easy and I'm no margarita snob. Their only purpose, if you ask me, is to get wasted on a hot day. No reason to get complicated with them.

Pretty much this.

If I had the choice, I'd take the tequila + triple sec, but I'm not going to complain either way.

I got one at a restaurant one time, it had a little bit of sprite/sierra mist in it. It actually was pretty good.

I usually just use the mix at home because it's easy.

Oh, I still like to use Triple Sec even if I'm using the mix.

I like the mix because it adds the sweetness while taking care of the lime/flavor. Though, they are often too sweet.

Tequila
Fresh squeezed lime juice
Orange liqueur - pick one (Cointreau, Grand Marnier, Patron Orange, High Quality Triple Sec)
Ice

That's all - nothing else.

Edit: If you MUST have it sweeter, a dash of simple syrup is the way to go.

Tequila, Triple Sec, Agave Nectar/Syrup, Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice, Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice. On the rocks. Salt the rim.

Tequila, lime juice and triple sec is the best by far, but usually when I'm making a margarita, I'm making a frozen margarita, in which case I'll use a combination of fresh limes and the mix. Limes are expensive, and in a frozen margarita, you can't taste the nastiness of the mix as much (especially when you cut it with fresh lime juice). Delicious on a hot summer day. And throw in some fresh strawberries? Well that's just perfection.

If you're too retarded to mix Tequila, Triple Sec, and Lime Juice...

...stick to beer.

Seriously.

BTW: If you float a little Mezcal on top... 😉

Try this recipe, it's the simplest and best I have ever had. No triple sec, OJ, sour mix, etc. necessary.

Make simple syrup by adding equal parts sugar and water, shake well (or boil if you really want it dissolved completely, but I normally do not do this). Now fill a pitcher with equal parts of that simple syrup, a good reposado tequila, and freshly squeezed lime juice.

Rub one of your lime rinds around the rim of a glass, dip it in sea salt. Fill the glass with ice cubes (or crushed if you prefer). Fill it up with your margarita mixture, then shake well.

Real tequila, not the cheap stuff which is supposedly 51% tequila but it's actually about two thirds rum.
Decent Triple Sec, Trader Joe's sells Bols for about seven dollars a liter.
Key limes, or if you're in the West they're called Mexican limes, same thing; a high-quality garlic press like Oxo squeezes all the good out of them.
If you have access to good quality ripe oranges, an equal amount of orange juice.
