Being a native, I recommend what others have. If you've never been here, you really miss out on the charm of the city, and of course some great restaurants, if you come during Mardi Gras. I recommend visiting and doing the tourist thing first, then do Mardi Gras on your 2nd visit.

What do you natives think of Jazzfest? I'm done with the portion of my life where I'd truly enjoy Mardi Gras, but jazzfest appeals to me...

Wow, it's easy to forget that some people don't have Mardi Gras where they live.

-Don't go to New Orleans. Go to Metarie, Biloxi, Gulfport, Pascagoula, Mobile, etc. Not NOLA.
-The Tuesday should be the wildest day, but there are parades almost daily leading up to it.
-If you want cheap, you'll have to stay some where further inland and drive down.

dj...Jazzfest is the second greatest party on the planet after MG. The food, the bands, the people...it's awesome. I have a hard time deciding whether I like Jazzfest or Mardi Gras better (I miss them both terribly since I've moved). The one drawback to Jazzfest is that it is on the last weekend of April and first weekend of May so it is HOT! Watch the site to see the schedule for next year when it's released. The best part is that in addition to the Fest during the day, not only are there Jazzfest-sponsored night shows, but tons of bands play at other local clubs during the 2 weeks.

jazzfest is nice, been there once.

NO isn't bad for spring break either. still plenty of debauchery on bourbon street but none of the mindless crowds that you can get crushed in. plus you can go see the rest of the place

I've only been to Bourbon Street sober, and if you go with drunk people it's not as fun.

I used to love heckling fans of opposing teams on Bourbon St the night before a home game. We'd go to Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop and have the piano player play "when the saints go marching in." It would drive the tourists nuts...got a few very drunk ones thrown out when they tried to assault the piano player when he wouldn't stop playing. :Q

Lol

Every time I went (3x I think) we had to run around looking for our drunk friends. I would also get offered crack 6 or 7 times each visit.

I loved watching tourists try to drive on Bourbon Street.

Man...crossing Bourbon St at night in a car is one of the most difficult automotive procedures imaginable. My gf used to work on Bourbon St. (not at a strip club :p) and I used to have to pick her up in the evening sometimes. I had to drive her to and pick her up from work every night the week before Mardi Gras 2 years ago because her work's parking garage was closed for construction (wonderful New Orleans timing

) and she couldn't find anywhere else to park, obviously. Sometimes it took me 2 hours to get across Bourbon. I DO NOT miss that about New Orleans. :)
