NEW ORLEANS - Gunfire erupted at a Mardi Gras parade Wednesday, and a woman was killed and three people were wounded, police said.

The shooting followed a fight, police said. Twelve people were detained and two guns were recovered.

"We don't know if they're all involved, but we want to err on the side of caution in case they are," Capt. Marlon Defillo said.

Two of the wounded were being treated at hospitals, and one who was grazed by a bullet declined treatment, Defillo said.

He added that none of the victims were involved in the fight and all appeared to be innocent bystanders. The name of the woman who was killed was being withheld.

The shooting happened during a parade by the Krewe of Muses, the only all-female contingent that rides during Mardi Gras.

Witness George Morales, 35, said the parade was proceeding normally when he heard four or five shots and the crowd started scattering "like a herd of people."

"Everything was normal, then it just came out of the blue," Morales said.
