mapped network drives

Ive got 2 HD's in my old computer (c & D)
my new pc is networked to the old one using crossover cable, drive sharing is enabled, and i have the drives mapped as X + Y.

everytime i restart the new PC(winXP) it says it's unable to reconnect to the drives.
I have to go to [view workgroups] and then re enter the pass words for each drive. after that is done file sharin works, but i'v still got a few quirks. ( i selected [reconect at logon] when i mapped the drives)

I store mp3's and video on the old pc and i cant access the mp3's from theold computer (using winamp 3) i get a "debug" menu that says "unknown field type encountered" hit [ok] and then i have nothing, winamp doesnt even pull up.

i'm not sure if these are related or not, but primary concern is networking.
once i get that straight i'll worry about mp3's.

just as i suspected. the winamp prolem had nothing to do with it. i just reloaded shitamp.
if anyone know about the networking issue it would help alot. thanks

Important For the purpose of the initial setting, disable all software Firewall (including WinXP native
ICF); disable any active Virus scan or any other utility that might intercept Network Traffic.

If you are not concern about internal security WinXP has a fast simple method of sharing, no user permissions and no passwords.

Windows XP Simple File Sharing

WinXP Pro has an additional more secure method:

Windows XP Professional File Sharing.

XP File Sharing Trouble

===============================
If all fails you can try to Install netBEUI.

Set NetBEUI as the Default Sharing Protocol in WinXP.

the new computer is XP and the old computers are 98se.

I only have the problem when i try to access 98 from XP .

I used XP to setup my file sharing, made a disc w/ XP to distribute to the other PC's.
I'm not concerned with internal security, but external does scare me. I have a fire wall with my router and norton for that.
the problem is:
everytime i restart the new PC(winXP) it says it's unable to reconnect to the drives.

That's some good info! Thanks! More to add to my collection of XP security BS...

DEATH to NetBeui! Don't install that. Your just looking for trouble... Unless your gonna uninstall TCPIP... I'd only use one protocol if you can help it.

Unless you like throwing another link in the chain to troubleshoot... 🙂 If that's the case might as well install apple talk while your at it!

the problem is that win 98 requires a pass word. everytime i restart the XP i have to go back to nework places and renter password be fore I can access the drives that i mapped on XP

thanks jack, but I already set it up that way it's 98 thats giving me probs

If you have to type password in Win98 in order to access WinXP mapped drive. It is WinXP that blocking you not Win98.

If you are the only user set WinXP to use Simple File Sharing, and gives all Users Admin privileges.

thats backwords. the drives I want to access are on the 98 computer. I've got them mapped onto the XP so I can access them directly. but every time XP restarts it says it cant reconnect. I have to go into the workgroup, click on each of the drives on 98 and re-enter the pass words. there is no option to save password or anything like that. once the pass words are in I can access the 98 fine (using Z: + Y: drives showing on XP)

It's frustrating as hell. I dont reboot XP often, but I have sevral people using it, and they aren't with it enough to go through that to get to my music on the old drives.

sorry not explaining well

This might be something if I can figure it out.

I got back on ole 98 and started tampering with the networking settings under control panel.
there is an access control tab on that screen.
under that there are 2 options
1. Share-level (currently selected, you supply password for each shared resource)
2. User-level
I'm thinking #2 will do it, but there is a box that says "obtain a list of users from"
I'm not sure what to put here, I tried my XP's user name and the workgroup name, but it wont take them (gives err that they are not acceptable)

Is option 2 what i'm looking for? where do I get a list of users from? it would make sense to me if I just listed the users, but that isn't working. maybe I dont have the right syntax?

If option 2 isnt what I'm looking for how can I get XP to keep those passwords so it can automattically reconect?

Edit: I changed syntax a bit on option 2 so it reads //user. it says the specified network name is invalid. I've tried the workgroup name, computer names, and user names, but get the same. maybe I need the network name? where do I find the network name. they just show as Local Area Network 1 & 2.on the XP?

I fixed the problem!

not exactly fixed, more of a work around.

I just moved the extra drive from the old computer to the new computer, and setup files sharing again, but since XP doesnt require a password for it's resources, 98 can automatically log on when I reboot!

yeah, momma always told me its nice to share!
