I think socialization is taking a back step though compared to the past.

Similar scene in my town today where those nice old houses still exist has the houses broken up into apartments and all dilapidated and most all those trees would be cut down long ago. I noticed in all these pics how well maintained everything is, of course I'm sure much of it is all new but still, we don't seem to see this kind of tidiness and upkeep of our towns today. Love the simple signs in #47 like "Eat" "smoke" "drugs" lol.

Pretty sure those would have been telegraph lines at the time. Each building with telegraph service would get their own pair of wires.

On so many pictures, you can play a game of "find the guy who isn't wearing a hat." (Beach photos are exempt. )

I'm pretty sure this is (or was 20 years ago) an active part of the Lincoln Park Zoo, the building in the background and that concession stand, the water fountain is gone, or drastically changed. Love the LPZ.

Nice pics. I think they'd been posted before but they're good enough that I'm not complaining. Kinda like those one WWII in color photos that showed stuff like production lines for the bombers and I forget what else.

And that was it.

How was life back then? Richer, due to the more personal nature of it? Or poorer, due to lack of technology and information?

I agree it depends on who you ask. I think I would have been happier too. Ignorance is bliss and all that. Most of the news from the internet just makes me sick of people and humanity in general. Before some ATOT smartass comes in here and says "all that terrible stuff still happened, blah blah blah" shut up and read the post, particularly the ignorance is bliss snippet.

For all the people surprised by the picture quality, I would imagine you are too used to looking at crappy cell phone pics, and have developed internal anti-aliasing. Don't forget the fact that it took a relatively long time for digital sensors to get anywhere near the detail of even 35mm film, much less the medium format a lot of these photos were probably taken with.
